What's with this?

It's more about donating your time and energy with out getting in monetary gain in return. I do it all of the time and unless you have a nice chunk of change to float on, volunteering will drain you dry. It makes you irritable and much harder to focus on the project at hand. So if someone was willing to donate the money... then of course it would be a nice gesture, but there are plenty of kids right in your own backyard who could use help too. You have to help yourself before you can help others.
