I doubt that, they would have bought into the notion of certain races being more advanced than others.
To some, it's a symbol of states' rights and self determination. To others, it's the symbol of a nation that was formed specifically to preserve slavery. I think both views have some merit. It's pretty obvious that the Civil War itself was about slavery, but symbols can mean different things to different people.
