Did the US go to war only because Germany and Japan declared war on them?

Would they have been perfectly happy to have seen Hitler and Mussolini in power otherwise?

Why did Japan think America wouldn't fight?

Why did America interfere in Iran, Vietnam, Cuba, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Grenada, Iraq, etc., etc., etc?

    Why did Dubya invade Iraq?

    Why did America elect Dubya?

Why does America even have the likes of Dubya on the ballot?

Dunno, haven't come across any Japanese histories - that theatre has never been of particular interest to me.

    This is USA in WWII?
    Start a different thread.

You might be surprised to know just how wildly U.S public opinion swayed in 39'-dec41'. Before Barbarossa, there was no way in hell the U.S was close to declaring against Germany. Even after Pearl, it would have taken quite a bit of masterdebating. Even despite FDR already loaning all kinds of goodies to Britain and providing escorts in the North Atlantic.

Japan was a total non-issue despite knowledge on Nanking and earlier Manchurian rapes. The people could really give a shit.

If you are talking about what FDR and his power trust wanted, history is quite clear on this. They wanted in.

FDR finagled Britain and France into war to check Germany so that Germany would not become a super-power.
European war fought with European troops and US built equipment, to revitalise the US economy was his aim.

I too have come to this conclusion. I was wondering what specifically lead you to this?? In my opinion it was not *just* FDR...

If it's what I think it is, I would understand if you did not want to discuss it.

Picked up a book the other week called "Friendly Fire" about inter-ally rivalry in WWII.
Most interesting: ties in with other stuff I've read, but not entirely sure I believe it all.

Not just FDR - apparently (news to me) Harry Hopkins was a Soviet spy - with FDR's knowledge

Surprised me as well - I thought the book was going to be about the political in-fighting, but it's fairly well documented, and like I said, it does tie in with stuff I've come across over the years.
Whether it's ALL true remains to be seen.

    7 bucks

The U.S. did not orchestrate Britain and France into WW II to sell them U.S. weapons. What a silly and ridiculous idea. Recall WWI? These countries didn't like each other then, nor just before WWII. Hitler was not a peace loving man. He envisioned a Third Reich similar to the Roman Empire which draws its breath from conquest.

Wow, I spent all that money to get documented and referenced information relating to government files that have only just been released, and then the troll comes along and says "not true!".
Hmmm, I wonder which has more credibility.

You should send Cosmictraveler your money instead of wasting it on crap research.

    Still trolling?
Explain exactly why (with references and documentation) it's "crap".
Or is just because you say so?
The government documents from that time are fake and you know... how?

It is a very well known fact that France/Britain and Germany fought WWI. It is also well known that Hitler took advantage of the poor German economy after WWI to rise to power on a wave of German nationalism. It is also known that Hitler invaded other countries without cause, killed millions, and was generally a sick bastard. Now, how is the U.S. going to manipulate Hitler into starting a war, when Hitler so clearly wanted that war? This historical revisionist nonsense your spouting is insulting to all WWII vets.

    Relax, read the book...jeez.

Frankly, Hitler had funding starting up, and you'd be very surprised with just a little "follow the money" investigation.

This all changes nothing regarding the sacrifices many people made during WWII.

Why should I read a book with a conclusion that is so clearly wrong? And as to Hitler's funding, what surprises do you have?

    Sure! Why not?

As to Hitler's funding, why would I waste time with "Why?"?

For the benefit of other readers who may be WWII vets - for one. Making claims that Hitler has surprise funding sources, and then not backing that up, will make others think your full of it.
