Do install Spybot S&D. It helps protect you from getting infested with spyware in the first place. Windows Defender also helps protect against spyware, and is also free, http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx

The consensus of most on this forum is that Avira is superior to AVG, http://www.avira.com/en/pages/index.php . It has an ad that pops up when it downloads new virus definitions encouraging you to upgrade to the pay version, but that is a small price to pay for superior protection.
