Regarding the aether idea and the OP: If we imagine a universe where vacant space existed that was made up of the sum of all positive and negative energies, would the equilibrium of energies constitute an aether? Rephrased: If space offered zero mass, zero energy and zero inertial "drag" yet was the sum of infinite (+) & (-) energies would the term "aether" be appropriate?
