No, that was at Farnborough and I went to Fairford. I used to visit Farnboro' regularly - so regularly in fact that I got press day tickets one year! I always came home with a rucksack and two carrier bags absolutely stuffed with brochures and technical specs from the trade stands (apart from the ones that told me me to piss off!).

I'm dubious about the whole thing.
It's a 50 Kilowatt beam, which means that every second it delivers 50 kilojoules of energy. The existing Phalanx system delivers ~62 kilojoules per round and fires 50-75 per second. And that's NOT counting the explosive content of each round.
The drone in the video takes an incredibly long time to die...
Now imagine that it's a quarter-tonne (or more) anti-ship missile doing Mach 2 or better. Wouldn't you want to kill it a damned sight faster than than they do to the drone?

Speaking of cool paint jobs, I always liked the nose art of WWII era bombers. The pin-up girls and my all time favorite: the teeth and eyes painted on the side.

@D, that Messerschmitt was really cool. Even had the German cross(can't think of the real name) on the side.

It was good to see an actual Daimler-Benz engined version (inverted Vee configuration) instead of the post-war Spanish Merlin version. They just look (and sound) wrong.
    And it's a Balkenkreuz.

    Um, it's an Apache helicopter.
The US Army names all its helicopters after Native Americans: Mojave, Choctaw, Sioux, Tarhe, Commanche...

But that's not what an Apache looks like. That's a Sioux Indian.

Picky picky picky. How many aviation enthusiasts would know that?
You'll have to come to an airshow with me sometime: we can annoy everyone by pointing out the errors!

Possibly, but nobody uses Sioux helicopters (at least for front-line duties) any more (M*A*S*H helicopters).

LOL, now you sound like my husband when I point out the errors while watching porn

So, when did they start painting Sioux Indians on Apache helicopters?

    Well they are Dutch...
It's the first time I've seen that display, and like I said, I wouldn't know Sioux from Apache anyway (except in helicopters). How do you tell?
