In western countries Halal butchers are prohibited from slaughter unless the animal is stunned with a bolt gun. They "say" a prayer without actually speaking it - it was determined that they didn't have to speak the prayer aloud.

That applies to all animals, however home kills are not so restricted - sheep farmers don't usually bother with the humane approach, and just quickly cut a sheep's throat then break its neck - not an easy job with larger animals, but I haven't seen that stop the odd farmer who couldn't be buggered getting their gun.

I think everyone who eats meat should do at least one home kill. The full monty too, just you, the animal, a knife (maybe a gun) and a shovel to bury the leftovers.

I haven't done it myself, but we used to routinely kill and eat chickens at home when my grandmother was alive. Until it became too expensive [and unnecessary considering the waste of meat], we used to routinely kill goats in the backyard for Bakr-Eid. I've killed enough rats [I admit I was squeamish for the first few] and could kill chickens for food.

I usually go early in the morning to get fresh prawns [still alive and swimming] because they taste best when they are really fresh. Sometimes its difficult to get the shell off, and we cook them in the shell. Maybe some of them are still alive?

We also get live crabs for our crab curries and boil them in that state because it makes good eats. Ghoda ghaas se dosti karega to khayega kya? [if a horse befriends the grass, what will he eat?]

Definitely. Many people don't eat crabs and lobsters on principle because of the manner in which they are killed - myself included.

UK law requires that all animals be stunned prior to slaughter with the exception of animals slaughtered in accordance with Islamic Halal or Jewish Kashrut law.

Is it just me, or does that seem a teensy weensy bit ridiculous?

I've seen people who won't eat fish if the head is on display. A culture of squeamishness.

If you're gonna eat it, its gonna hurt them at some point.

    Its food.

There's a technique for killing sheep that involves slitting a fold of the belly skin and reaching in to stop its heart. I've seen it demonstrated on camera, and the sheep needed very little restraint - if it hurt, it didn't show.

But for regular folks, slitting the throat with a sharp knife is probably as humane as anything except a quick smash of the head or sufficient stun - as humane as guillotining the animal entirely, surely.

In the Miss Navajo competition pageant, one of the events the young women compete in for score is to slaughter, butcher, and prepare a meal from a sheep. The kill there is by throat slit, and the sheep - while unhappy about being pushed around- do not seem to convulse or react violently to the kill itself.

Oh I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't care how their McDonalds Happy Meal ended up dead and served with fries.
Nevertheless, I would like to think that most human beings have principles when it comes to animal welfare. We have laws in the UK that require our animals to be killed in a humane way. In that context, humane means by keeping the animal's death as calm and pain-free as possible. Now I'm of the opinion that our existing animal welfare standards need to be drastically improved and that the issue of intensive-farming also needs to be addressed. However, since when was literally bleeding to death ever considered humane?

Yet again, religion in all its irrationality wins out over common sense. Yet again, we have an example of how the world would be a better place if we learned to grow out of what is nothing more than an immature stage of societal development.

Here's the correct Halal way - not barbaric at all!

You can find the videos on youtube under the following titles:
These first two videos show how to get the animal to submit for ritual slaughter:
Mercy Halal Islamic Slaughter Part 1
Mercy Halal Islamic Slaughter Part 2 - A

And here's where the slaughter is actually done:
Mercy Halal Islamic Slaughter Part 2 - B

NOTE: He slaughters several, so it is not a one-time-only-trick!

Look at how peacefully they die, with only a small involuntary muscle contraction when the brain loses consciousness through lack of oxygen!

And here is experimental verification that if a sharp knife is used, there is no pain to the animal!:

Google "halalstudy" to find a report of a study done after surgically implanting EEG electrodes in the animals to monitor pain for the common stun method and for halal slaughter.

So there were 3 little girls that had there throats cut by there father in California about 25 years ago . He left them for dead and headed back to his own country right after he went to his wife's work and killed her and a bunch of her coworkers .

2 of the girls died out in the Cascade Mountains of California . Coastal range around Santa Rosa I do believe . They bleed out after many hours . 24 hours later they were found and the one girl lived . She lived to testify after many months of extradition papers and cooperation with the Mexican government. I do believe he got the death penalty . That is how I want to remember it .

I would feed my dog to my family if that was my last resort . My cat too. Oh I don't have a cat ! Your cat!!

I am thinking you all would eat of the Cat- roast if you are hungry enough

We wouldn't want to mention the thought that killing a sentient creature to eat at all is going to be optional for many of us... *ducks*

Cows have to be at one year old and goats have to be at least two years old for halal slaughter I think.

Okay then stun the animal 5 seconds after making the incision but it's still debatable whether that would turn meat of the animal into carrion or not and carrion is forbidden to eat.

See the thing is there is a rumor floating around for many centuries that if an animal feels pain or they have an adrenaline rush it spoils the meat . It is said the meat tastes different from muscles tensing up . Not true . It is a wives tale . I know from killing lots of animals . I cut many animals throats too. They all taste the same except the taste is dependent on what the animal eats . Now Animals that eat alfalfa or grain taste a lot like beef . It is amazing how much more they taste like beef verses an animal that has been eating sage . They eat what cows eat and they taste more like cows .

Oh Sorry ! I just realized we were talking about pain the animal feels . A yeah ! Ever shoot a deer in the hind quarter . Yeah don't ! They squeal like little children being beat by there evil step father . Like if I cut someones leg off . That is how they scream . Step on a dog toe . Head shots are the best for ending it quick . A little quiver and all done . You can tell when the eye glosses over . It is funny to Me that that very minute death happens the spark of life is obviously gone from the body . There is no mistaking it in humans or other creatures.

+When you do that cut in the neck, the blood starts to go out rappidly, and the animal looses conciousness rapidly (while the knife is very sharp, that you he wan't feel much pain first, ever injured your self with a sharp knife or something sharp without knowing? and then you find out later or a minute later when it starts to feel like burning? also, ever felt dissy after a bad injury that you lost some good quantity of blood? ever wondered why many people cut the vains in their hands to suicide? it's so that they loose conciousness when they loose blood or start loosing blood, and then die, let's say "peacefully?" ) , since there's not ennuf blood reaching the brain, so the brain send orders for more blood, so the heart, pumps more blood (that's why you see the animal making those movements after the slaughterin while the blood is going out) , but nothing reachs the brain because of that cut.
Besides that, the blood is a very fertile environement for germs, and it's not very healthy to eat meat full of blood.

Somehow animal rights and religion seems like an unhappy marriage. Based on my profound experience with unhappy marriage I would just say never the twain/twixt shall meet.

Of course if you could come up with a religion that advocates for HUMAN rights, you'd be a step closer to finding one amenable to lookin out fer alla godz lil critters. Even the lowliest toxic parasite - somewhere in the class of malaria - needs love, too.

I'm out to lunch on this topic. In every respect. I don't like to eat meat too much not cuz I'm vegan but for some reason it kind of bothers me. Like at some point in my life I realized it kinda stinks. And I can smell it in my sweat. Yuk. Love animals, the cuddly ones, not scorpions or men-o-war or anything that ever attacked me. Dogs, kitties. But if you stare at one long enough, you get the feeling they're parasites too. I don't keep any pets because when you have to leave, like to go buy their grub, and you leave them penned up, well to me it's like a jail. Love to play with other people's golden retreivers or shepherds, all those playful ones that like to catch frisbees and jump in the pool. But man do they stink too.

Also, there's rules in the islamic animal slaightering (also the jewish), wish is, use a very sharp knife, and make it fast (like, "SURPRISE!") .
Don't slaughter an animal, infront of another animal.
You don't drag the animal violently to the slaughter place (and defferently don't torture or hit an animal wich is something not just when slaughtering, but something general with all animals)

I respect your view, but there should be always the least mesurements that also take in consideration the animal's emotions, to slayghter or whatever.
Other whise, how do you suggest we should get meat? raise it in labs? (that already exists, but people don't like it, and it don't taste good)
And with all my respect, the rules of how to slaughter an animal, are far more better, than those in that video.

(I suggest not to watch these if you can't handle it)
