Generally science fiction can get away with unrealistic characters or unrealistic science/technology, but not both. At least, not if you want it to be any good.
Just thought I'd address a couple of the Sunshiny points Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! - I agree 100% with the computer core thing. While there were two main processors in the Core room where Human Torch froze to death (did you notice the irony?)...why was there only one Core room??? And why was it that it seemed that any moron could simply walk in? The crispy guy should not even have been able to reach the door without raising all heck of alarms...even if he was the captain of the other ship...change codes anyone?? - Speaking of sunburned guy...correct! He was a very unbelievable plot twist (even if a suspenseful one). I only appreciate the fact that it appeared that his involvement was a critique of fundamentalist religions' tendency to f*** up very productive (scientific) endeavours. - Yeah...if the ship was able to converse intelligently...the normal NASA airplane-spaceship thingie could have housed the specialists, who would be following just in case remote intervention was required...and bring them BACK! - I don't agree with your evaluation of the device. In this case you have to suspend your disbelief and accept that humans came up with the appropriate device.
Oh, I could have, had it not been for THIRTY-SE7EN other plot oversights peppered throughout the entire film. ~String
