You know, I often think that it's partly:
    -the biological aspects of sexuality
-what has probably existed as a quasi-universal sexual symbol at various times through history and different cultures
-possibly influenced a small (or major, now that I think about it) way by the religious and moral values that prevail in a given culture
-perhaps heavily influenced by the mass media, especially popular, youth-oriented media

-the hidden or forbidden aspect may also influence things

Take the old "fetish" (I believe that is what they are called) statuette known as the Venus of Willendorf as an example of what I would probably consider a quasi-universal sexual/fertility symbol.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_of_Willendorf
The article has a link to two others about different "venus" figurines.
There is speculation about their significance, but they have been regarded as representative of female fertility as well as religious objects representing a Mother Goddess of sorts, hence my use of the term fetish above (being a charm believed to have magical power).

I think the large breasts are definitely, historically, a symbol of fertility. So I think in one sense, large breast size has carried a certain attraction since ages ago.

Other body parts may gain an allure because of their hidden/forbidden/private nature. That would definitely vary with cultural mores, morality, and religion.
As someone noted in a different thread (don't remember who) considering public display of something ordinarily innocuous like ankles, or as in the example given (by takandjive in another thread?) if covering hands became prominent, that hands would suddenly become especially intriguing and attractive because of their hidden nature. I think that's probably a pretty good influence on why certain things are attractive.

I think in modernized society with pervasive media influence, whatever gains popularity on the television and other forms of media (including music) will also have a huge influence on what is regarded as popular and attractive. It doesn't need to be mentioned how the media influences perceptions of what is hot, what is cool, what is attractive, what is fashionable, etc.
I mentioned youth-oriented media because not only are youth more influenced by peer and popular pressure as well as oft-repeated rhetoric, but as far as the female anatomy is concerned, young males especially seem to like to think and speak alike about what is considered attractive about women's bodies. That may touch on another attraction: the attraction of conformity.

As a side-note, I have an article linked somewhere about how peer pressure and groupthink can change the way people think. Sometimes it may coerce people into doing things they feel are wrong, or maybe wouldn't have done without that push, but, maybe not surprisingly, it can permanently change the way a person thinks, and apparently this change can actually be detected in brain imaging! So if someone is bombarded by enough of this or that, they may really catch on..

Some guy wants you to like Cannibal Corpse? Napalm Death? Or maybe he's more of a King Diamond man!?!?

I think the pin-up type girl is what death metal is stabbing for. I'm not exactly sure.

Of course, apart from popular and cultural influences on attraction, there's always just plain old preference, in all its peculiar and whimsical glory!

Why do I usually prefer Bach over Beethoven? Why do people dislike both?

Sometimes there is no easy answer...

Yes. Some of them probably would stab someone for a pin-up girl.

I think of breast implants as the height of feminine vanity.
And some are just unusually, unattractively large. Some may be shocked, but there is such a thing as excess! Bigger doesn't always equal better...

My friend knew a girl who was short and had a rather delicate frame, but what she described as really big breasts, and they were constantly causing her discomfort and back pain because of their weight. She wanted to undergo breast reduction to help alleviate her breasts of burden, but ironically, her insurance company thought of it as cosmetic! :bugeye:
I can easily understand breast enlargement being merely cosmetic, but breast reduction to reduce strain on your body??? Silly? I think so.

Seems like these things can't really be explained by biology. They seem to ebb and flow with the times. A commonly sighted example, is how a beautiful woman like Marilyn Monroe would no longer be considered the ideal beauty, that she once was. Women like myself would have been shunned only a few hundred years ago for being so thin (it obviously meant that my father was poor, he couldn't even afford to feed me properly). Sexual attraction varies just like fashion styles. So a 100 years from now what we find attractive today may be repulsive. The only body parts that probably maintain constant popularity throughout the ages are the genitals.

But we've never really lived in a time with so many marked preferences that vary by subculture/ethnicity. Or, I may seriously be showing my cultural ignorance here. We always say, "Well, in 14th century Europe, they preferred heavier women." Was that the general consensus? Were there significant pockets of people who liked slender butts?

I agree, but youth seems so divided into so many little groups. I was talking with a group of 16/17 year olds the other day (I sub sometimes), and I was VERY surprised that the boys expressed a real disdain for the superthin Kate Moss type as well as a very plastic with huge breasts type. (I realize very well they also were playing to their audience, but I assume they were being genuine, in part.

Post it if you stumble on it.

Bleh! Bad picture! And yes, Cannibal Corpse it is.

Did you just call two classical composers tits?

But we don't REALLY express that genitals are pretty, nor the ideal genitals. Why not?

I could, but my ass is for Northern European eyes only.

The lower tummy or the pubis?

    God, I hope so!

I can't say I know much about who liked what and when. But we ain't livin in the dark ages no mo. Radio, television, print, pornography, the Internet (and pornography on there too) probably add to the diversity of opinions that already exist, if that's what you're getting at when you say But we've never really lived in a time with so many marked preferences that vary by subculture/ethnicity.

They're just queer, and belong in prison.

    Okay, maybe not.
Well, I was only giving out ideas above as to what may affect people in their sexual preferences. Or just plain old physical attractions (doesn't always have to be sexual, does it?).
Humans are way too complicated. I don't think you could pin down one or two causes for anything. Often, the individual has their own ideas, and others help them make up their minds about the rest.

I am very sure I have it bookmarked (I think on my other computer). When I find it, I will post it.

    No! King Diamond, KING!
First Cannibal Corpse, then Six Feet Under. And then Cat Stevens.

I think Beethoven was the womanizer of the two, so tit most likely applies to him.

    Who says?

None of it matters if you get married and have kids. You'll see her body do things you never thought physically possible. Then it's a matter of choking back that pride and finding something, ANYTHING to fancy long enough to do the act before the bourbon wears off....

But really, when I did Metal and art my girls were always a little bottom heavy.

Hmmm, maybe that's why I never went anywhere with Metal...or girls for that matter. I had the cover art all wrong
