this is a thread to dispel social stereotypes that are believed on face value but are actually false, some are quite widespread, popular and oft-believed.

one i've heard often is the theory you can generally guage or predict how a male will treat women based on how he respects or disrespects his mother. the truth is his attitude toward women has nothing to do with it as people often compartmentalize. there are plenty of men who are male chauvinists and/or abusive toward women but treat their mothers differently based on compartmentalizing her into a special category. its a game of the dishonest psyche and actually reveals a level of prejudice, hypocrisy, cognitive dissonance, and antisocialism on a fundamental level. there are many examples of this such as men who sexualize or objectify women but are wary of the same with their daughter, males who treat their mothers with reverence but flippant and disrespectful of other women etc. in short, a male can treat other women in ways he would never want to happen to their mother simply as seeing her as an extension of himself and vice versa.

what is true is that a man who does respect women will most likely treat their mother well and with respect with the caveat the mother is not an abusive person, disrespects him and such circumstances. it is the inverse that is true of this stereotype.

feel free to add your own social myths.

I actually agree with you. I treat my mother with great respect but am generally obnoxious towards other women. I must state that i am not abusive, but rather have a licence to act like a complete and utter drunken b*st*rd.

Oh i have grown out of behaviour somewhat! However by the time i realised i had a licence to act like a drunken idiot, it was too late.

But my defence mechanism has saved my life more times than not. I beleive i am misunderstood. For people say to me, "you're abusing me" as an accusation, to which i reply, "certainly not, i love you!" I have found this to be quite a useful mechanism for i have lost count of the number of times i have insulted the people i care about, however my reply is more than words. I find WHY i love them! I have admired my friends perseverance, her radiant smile (she glows) but most of all i realised that she loved me too. Even if she never said it, i knew. However i am not a liar and i could not part with the message i had until it was TRUE love.

One "myth" that I have actually found to be fairly accurate is that you can gauge how someone will treat their spouse in ten years by how they treat waiters. It's been surprisingly on target for a lot of people I've known.

All i know about waiters is a philosophical study i did (what i call logic.)

When a waiter takes an order he/she writes it on a pad. The writing from that top sheet will etch through onto every other sheet below, meaning every single sheet has the same writing on it. This leads me to conclude that everybody uses the same language. Should there be any doubt, consider the following: the top order sheet is given to the chef, who prepares the order. He can undetstand it!

I beleive English is an innate language (we are born with it) and i am always interested to discuss such a matter with foreigners. Everyone from abroad ive spoken to has told me they are taught English.

If there wasnt a universal, innate language i doubt language could exist at all, else translation would be impossible.
