Sifting through a disk of dust circling another star, astronomers have seen some of the most convincing evidence yet for young planets in a solar system that could be like an early version of our own.
The clues, collected by two separate teams using the Keck telescopes in Hawaii, involve distorted features in the disk of material circling a star called Beta Pictoris. Astronomers have previously seen signs in the disk of planet formation, but the new studies paint a more convincing picture.

Astronomers have said in recent months that they are on the verge of being able to see planets during or just after their birth around other stars. Most believe that dust disks like the one around Beta Pictoris are similar to the one that orbited our own Sun after its formation. As the dust begins to coalesce, asteroids, comets and planets develop.
