The people who would never vote for a lesbian president are by far on the Republican side of the spectrum. And the same goes for those who would vote for a candidate who feels it would be best to let the states decide on matters such as gay and interracial marriage, and freeing businesses from onerous laws such as having to cater to customers who have distasteful religions and skin colors. To restate the obvious, at this time the Republican party doesn't seem to have a candidate who could win the nomination, then have a chance in the general election.

Rand's father was a more sensible man I think.
    Always interesting at any rate.
Or did he have weird ideas too?

Republicans have been running on the implicit but quite clear promise of governmental support for racial bigotry since Nixon, and have won at least as often as they've lost - occasionally, as with Reagan, landslide victories in national elections.

They can count on winning the white male vote that way - since taking the bigot vote from the Dems in "68, they've owned that demographic - and so the only problem they have is suppressing the vote of everyone else enough to make up for the demographic trends.

The vote suppression task they face is a challenge, true, but not nearly as daunting as would be attempting to win a major election without the white male bigot vote securely in pocket.

In the current Republican Party and its electoral base, racism is not a bug - it's a feature, a core principle of operation and part of the foundation of their political structure. Bigotry is their base. And that setup has been working pretty well for the folks who set it up - they are now the wealthiest, most powerful human beings ever seen on this planet, and the entire national political debate is over how much more to cut their taxes, how many more favors the government can grant them.
