He claimed liberals made up the story about Thomas Jefferson fathering children upon Sally Hemings (an academic thesis formed in the 1790s and treated in film and literature in 1853, 1991, 1995, etc, with renewed academic study and DNA tests in 1997-1998) to distract from the accounts of William Clinton's adulterous affair with Monica Lewinsky (1995-1997, scandal breaking 1998) .
