Octopole/Quadrupole moments of the CMBR

    The BBC are reporting that WMAP has discovered something interesting about the CMBR. Unfortunately the WMAP site does not seem to cover it, as far as I can see.

    So Ok, heres the nitty gritty. What is a quadrupole or octopole moment in this context.

    I've found a intersting site describing a bit on this but to be honest this is slightly above my knowledge. It seems to be saying that the quadrupole moment is linked to the polarization of the CMBR as the era of recombination stopped.

    Anyone care to add a little enlightenment and discuss the implications further.
