Regardless of the religion however, all fundamentalists tend to stick to the literal letter of the law, as was done almost exculsively throughout history until the modern period.

i think that is a bad description of fundamentalist, you just described many religious people, and they dont all wanna blow up in the name of god or start a holy war in the name of christ. you are not religious im guessing, so im giving the benefit of the doubt.
