How funny Greenberg that I would use a dog metaphor before I read your Mu? I feel like I have been learning lately that MU should be a much more common response. I also feel like responding more and more: What are you doing?
You may be on to something.. I'm not saying the dog shouldn't enjoy running, or people shouldn't enjoy living. It's just a thought that I can't shake off.
"Mu" in Chinese means "no" or "nothing". I think one of the more common sources for it are the stories in the Gateless Gate. But by now, the word has acquired almost mystical proportions and is sometimes (especially by some Western Buddhists) used as an "Answer Almighty". When a question is such that it can neither be answered with a "yes", or "no", or otherwise analytically explained, then we answer Mu.
Thanks for explaining that Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! I do not agree that the question can't be answered though. If the universe suddenly disappears it would not matter (to anyone or anything) because nothing would be left.
If the Universe suddenly disappears - how would you know what would happen? How do you know nothing would be left? If noone would be there to know this nothingness, would it still be nothingness?
What would happen ? Nothing would happen. And nobody would know that because no one is there anymore. In fact there wouldn't even be a 'there'. The universe is all there is, so if it disappears nothing is left. Not even time or space or whatever.
what about all those alternate universes everyone speculates about. What if one of those crashes into ours and makes a new one?
Reading this brings to mind that song...lol If a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear? So many "ifs' out there, who the hell really knows.
How do you know? Have you been there? Or are you just speculating? Based on what? What are your assumptions?
That's right there is no grand scheme of things. However, Dawkins describes life on Earth as an "information bomb", not unlike a supernovae. Our challenge is to: 1. find any other information bombs around the universe 2. ? 3. Profit!
That all too uncomfortable bring-me-back-to-reality question. Delusion carried by desire feels so sweet.
If there are multiple universes all of them really comprise one overall universe. The universe is all there is.
no. That's like saying all the animals on the planet comprise one overall animal. If one dies, it doesn't affect them all.
How do you know that I have not expressed either agreement nor disagreement with you. I don't know what would happen if the Universe suddenly disappeared. I'm inquring how you know these things - the parts I bolded. Your answers strike me as fully certain. How can you be so sure? How do you know?
Orleander the very definition of 'universe' is 'all that exists'. So if alternate universes are proven to exists this definition has to be updated to include all universes.
I couldn't answer this. Edit: Don't take this to be light. I am merely being consequently skeptical, seeking to take for granted as little as possible.
