That is interesting to think about, but I would not bet that what he is saying is exactly true. I would say that he is just building the hype so that a bunch of people would sit around on message boards and become fanboys while talking about it.... The movie was pretty good, but had many parts that could have been taken out, and still had the same quality. I still think the first movie dominated.
