    The leaves in Texas are just starting to turn color.

    <activate science mode>

    What is the catalyst that sparks the change in color?...is the shorting of sunlight each day, or is it temperature related..or something else?

    It's the shortening of the days (but from experience I suspect temperature changes also affect it) that prompts trees to break down the chlorophyll in their leaves.
    When the green fades away the color of other molecules present in the leaves becomes visible.
    Carotene gives a yellow color, while anthocyanins give the leaves a red color.
    What colors the leaves change to in fall depends on the proportions of these two molecules present.
    Hope that helps
