Hitler took advantage of a situation he otherwise would have been unable to do what he did.

My vote is for Julius Caesar. He created the situation then took advantage of it.

My vote goes to Zhao Ziyang, Premier of P R China from 1980 to 1989, greatest of the reformers who guided their country away from the legacy of Mao Zedong, and set it on the path of economic growth. A man of humanity, bravery, and insightful practicality, he was purged at the time of the Tiananmen massacre. In years to come, his stature in the history of modern China will surely increase as greatly as that country's GNP.

Whoever voted for Louis Napoleon III, I hope you know that he's not the same person as Napoleon Bonaparte. Napoleon III was president, and later emperor, of France in the mid-1800s.

Otto von Bismark was by far the greatest politician. He created an empire and destroyed another.

    ***************
M*W: I have personal reasons for voting for William Ewart Gladstone. I am a great grandniece of his, and "blood is thicker than water." Otherwise, I might say "Charlemagne," John Adams," or "Davy Crockett," who are also my ancestors. But that's not all: I would also want to acknowledge John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, those wonderful folks from England, who came to America on the Mayflower.

    Chief Crazy Horse

Crazy Horse (Lakota: Thašųka Witko, literally "His-Horse-is-Crazy")[1] (ca. 1842 – September 5, 1877) was a respected war leader of the Oglala Lakota, who fought against the U.S. federal government in an effort to preserve the traditions and values of the Lakota way of life.

He was a military leader, though, not a political leader.

You mean Louis Napoleon III's empire?

Yes, I think Bismarck was the best. I voted for Cavour though. Oh well.
