after someone recommended the adaware, i deleted the wrong file, and now i can't play my pogo.com games because my java is not up to date. ive tried re-installing over the old program, hoping it will just fill in the gaps that should've been there. it didn't work, and mozilla isn't worth the time it takes download. soo.. im going to have to uninstall IE and re-instal it.. but.. uh. i have one big problem...

does anyone know WHERE the uninstall is for internet explorer. i have windows 98/2000, and i can't ifnd it anywhere. if anyone could help me out, id really appreciate it.
    thanks.

Try installing the latest version of IE. Its IE6 I think. That may do it

Ah, well, there goes my plan. My next step would be to reinstall windows, but don't, cos I'm stupid.

You should try and ask Stryderunknown for help. He knows IE like the back of his hand

Make sure that if your downloading JAVA, that you get JRE, thats JAVA RUNTIME ENVIRONMENT, don't bother with the SDK as that's a Development kit. (Although it does contain JRE).

Internet Explorer can have the JAVA module reloaded on it's own without installing the whole thing.

You should be able to go to the Microsoft website and start the install for IE6, then when you get to pick your install, make sure you pick manually rather than just Typical.

You should be able to decide to download the JAVA JIT COMPILER seperately (this is a virtual Machine that many people have used to exploit windows systems in the past, but with IE6 most of the bugs are patched.)

You didn't find the VM "Virtual Machine".
That Java Link that was given to you does have the JVM download on it (Just the runtime)

I'd go with the manual download, but it can be a bit large (well the SDK is)

    so your best going with:
    http://java.sun.com/getjava/manual.html

ok. i tried to play my game again.. and this is the error message i keep getting:

    The following error has occurred:
    Java Corrupted or Misinstalled
    Explanation:
This error occurs when your Java software has been either misinstalled on your browser or if Java software has been corrupted in some way. Some of the symptoms include a large number of "exception errors", applets not showing up (or showing up as a blank or gray frame), and other crash problems.

    How to Fix the Problem:
The best way to solve the problem is to upgrade to a newer version of the browser you use. This will come with the latest versions of the Java software so you'll be able to run our Classic Games properly. (You should uninstall your current version before you begin the upgrade in order to start with a clean setup.) If you're already using the latest version of your browser and are experiencing this problem, it's still best if you uninstall your browser and then reinstall to begin anew.

I know if it was my computer system I could fix it, but it's alot of moving around the system and small tweaks to find out what works, which is of course awkward to explain to someone else unfortunately.

There is one possible way you might be able to fix it.

Open explorer, go to Tools -> Windows updates (that should be correct).

This will take you to the microsoft update site, make sure you pick "Product updates".

Once thats open, look at the patches (hopefully there are some) and look for the VM patch. that should re-install your whole Virtual machine for Java.

(This is of course if you don't keep your system updated)

To answer your original question it is very difficult(/impossible) to wrench IE away from Windows

The solution may simply be to uninstall Windows.

Windows won't let you remove certain files or alter it from your desktop (once windows has loaded and you are in normal mode).

    However

Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

You can do this from complete MS DOS mode or Win98 startup disk. You'll be browsing the file system on your harddrive not using the normal windows interface, that means without the components MS put into windows that prevent you from tinkering with it in certain ways (like deleting system files).

Just select shut down from your start menu, and instead of selecting the other options like Stand By, select Restart in MS-DOS Mode.

This is the full MS DOS mode, not the DOS shell box you can use while running windows.

Or you can boot your computer from the Win98 startup disk.

If you are familiar with DOS command lines, it is easy.

You'll have your current directory patch like C:\Program Files layed out as text on a black screen. So you could go to your C drive root directory by typing C: If it leaves you there, type cd\

So anyhow, you can remove stuff MS doesn't want you touching from there. To delete something, type del And let's say you have a file, well it can be up to 8 numbers or letters long, then the 3 figure extension identifying the file type.

So if you were at C:\> And you had a porn pic on your main drive (just an example now folks

), you would type "del porn.jpg" And that would execute the command to delete the porn pic. If the file name exceeds 8 letters it will usually be cut off by a ~1 after the first 6 letters.

See, you can really get around microsoft this way

Some of this stuff you can't do in safe mode, but in these other two modes it is possible.

This will allow you to fix these problems without reformatting your harddrive and loosing all of the valuable stuff you want to keep. Assuming of course, you have a Windows 98 CD - so you can reinstall Windows or the essential files.

Windows won't touch accessory files if you reinstall it. So if you had a game on your harddrive, like Baldur's Gate - that might be C:\Baldur's Gate When windows installs, by default it goes to rhe path of C:\Windows

Windows has nothing to overwrite and does not delete any files on your harddrive in the process.

So if you had an important science paper on your harddrive that you need to keep, removing your Windows folder won't mess with that (as long as this science paper is not sitting on your desktop).

However, as far as applications you have installed, like Photoshop, or a firewall like Zonealarm, while the files and data themselves will remain, your windows registry file has been deleted, so these programs cannot find the links and keys they need to different files on your harddrive (that are not in their main folder).

As long as you have the installation discs for these programs you should be ok. Once windows is up and running again, simply pop the CD into your drive and reinstall it. Thought you should delete the previous installation first.

Also, we are talking about proggies themselves. So let's say you have Baldur's Gate on your harddrive. And let's say you have some saved games of really high level characters you want to keep. You'll need to remove those games and put them some place safe (like on your desktop, or a "My Important Files" folder), since the base directory is going to be deleted, everything else inside goes bye bye as well.

Well I have been a little drunk when writing this post, but I hope you guys get the drift (well, not drunk, but took my Ambein and had a nice shower, so I am majorly sleepy - so don't blame me if I blow up your computer

You need to download "virtual java machine" I have no idea where to get it or where to download it. I just know I am very sure that is your problem. I used to have the same problem.
