Is it hard? Is it worth it? Is it harder then Java? Anyone here knows it?

    Two different tools.

Java is use for programming and development.

Marcomedia Flash is mainly use for animation. I mean, you're using your visual skills here with Flash, and sometimes along with programming if you're doing action scripting in Flash.

If you can program, you can learn flash, provided you're into visually designing. It's easy if you have some animated ideas (no pun intended) in your mind.

Get the trial version of Flash MX 2004 http://www.macromedia.com/downloads/ there are sample flash and basic tutorials on there.

Well... I'm thinking of using it for designing a website. But I wonder if drawing a circle in Flash is harder then drawing a circle in Java.....

  7. No. Drawing anything in flash is pretty damn easy. Reading the book on the other hand, takes a life time...

Not actually much easier when it comes to java really and, if you're incorporating .xml interfaces and the like, flash imports and integrates with other artwork programmes far better than most GUI design programmes.

    Go, go with the Flash!

It's really annoying to draw with Java.... You have to find the EXACT coordinates....

Do you need to do that with Flash?

Btw, any good resources in the internet?

no, flash is like mspaint with motion tweens to make shit move. I would not recommend using a book to learn flash, you can find good explanations on the net.

What about some examples of sites that use the best of Flash?
Also.... what is the difference between the different types of Flash (Flash 5, Flash MX, etc...)?

The www is moving towards minimalism and clearer organization of information. If you can do that with flash, then learn it. Otherwise, you might want to look into better web technologies like css or ruby on rails.

A currently fashionable web framework using the Ruby scripting language. It shoots laser beams out of its eyes and cause web developers to evolve into immortal beings of pure energy.

A good flash site is http://sofake.com.
A very simple fade-in, fade-out technique that combines elegantly with superior graphic art. Loading time is short and it doesn't have stupid menus that go schiing. Or ffffiink.

On the original question, flash is easier for small-medium graphical problems. Java is better at everything else. Flash is a speciality language whereas java is a general programming language. Your audience is more likely to have Flash than Java due to the fact it doesn't ship with MS OSs.

Java can use Java RMI and CORBA and integrates with databases without a glue language. Java would be faster. Java has better libraries for everything. Better streams, better data structures etc. I expect Java would be faster if you had to do alot of processing on the clientside. Java security is better. Multithreading. UDP? Does Flash have UDP support?

Alright. The absolute, most amazing Flash website I've ever seen is 2advanced.com. If I had a business and I wanted a cool website, I'd hire these guys in a minute. (they must be pretty expensive though). Check their portfolio, they've done some amazing work. I've spent hours on that site.
