So I've always been into fairy tales. It seems like lately they've been getting more attention - sometimes with good efforts, sometimes with mediocre or darn right lousy ones. While I don't expect recent trends to be a major culture-changing sign of new respect for folk traditions or anything, it does cause me to believe that fairy tales might be somewhat on the minds of people other than me, so I'm hoping that this question will actually get some response. For starters, please share what your favorite fairy tale is and why. My favorite has always been Beauty and the Beast. I think that its basic message is something that transcends culture or time period. I also like that the girl gets to do the saving - I'm not a feminist but I do prefer a female protagonist whom I can respect. In particular I like that she's not a warrior-princess type, that she does the saving through more a "feminine" inclination toward compassion, nurturing, et cetera. Plus, the whole semi-imprisoned in a castle with a troubled prince thing? Totally hot.
This one, but others too ....... http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...N_7i80NOsgRRLksZ7Q7eQ&bvm=bv.1355325884,d.eWU
Well...that story is one way to celebrate kidnap and rape I guess. Always liked the ones about the old women cooking and eating children too. Maybe it is time for some new ones...but not the made for tv set that are out there now. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
So you didn't like the Rocky and Bullwinkle Show? That is where that clip is from and it, to me, isn't at all about kidnap and rape. How do you get that out of Jack and the Beanstalk told backwards?
I referenced "Beauty and the Beast" bro, from the OP. Guess I should have made it more clear. Apologies for the confusion. I grew up watching Rocky and Bullwinkle. Loved Boris and Natasha...also Mr Peabody and Sherman. Always wanted a Wayback machine. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I had wondered if your comment was meant for me, but didn't want to butt in if it wasn't... I'll give you that Beauty and the Beast involves kidnapping, of a sort, but rape? Only in the some of the more... shall we say intense? ... retellings. The primary relationship in Beauty and the Beast is indeed a bit darker than in many fairy tales, but I guess that's part of what I appreciate about it. If your response was partly due to my "totally hot" comment, I should explain that that was meant a bit cheekily, and not as a legitimate part of the discussion - though I did say it after all, so I've got no complaint. Do you have a favorite fairy tale for comparison?
