It is now reported that those who were most at risk have been ordered into quarantine because they did not comply with the request from healthcare authorities to quarantine themselves.

Adequate machinery for testing body temperature costs about $15.
Why was he allowed on a flight from an infected country?
And why was he not checked upon entering the US?
It takes about 5 seconds per person.

    More bungling.

Well it is my understanding his temperature was taken before boarding the airplane. But this virus doesn't respect human schedules. He could have become ill why on the plane. Now that doesn't appear to be the case here. Further, he came from a place where corruption is fairly commonplace. It wouldn't surprise me if a screener were bribed to pass someone. And depending on how the screening is done, it wouldn't be difficult to fool the screener.

In Nigeria, they have been checking passengers arriving since July.

    What is the US doing?
    Crossing their fingers?

    Added later. From Guardian.

OK, it's not a surefire method, but better than nothing.
    Was he checked on arrival?

I don't know. They tell us Customs agents are trained how to spot diseased individuals. I think that is code for they didn't. I don't know how you can reliably train people to spot Ebola victims my looking at them.

Maybe they are looking for the numbers 666 burned into peoples' foreheads.

Seoul and Narita both use thermal cameras to look for cases of SAR. But the past half dozen times I have been to those places monitoring has been cursory at best.

Unfortunately a lot of people have been saying that (a LOT of false alarms over the past few weeks) so we are getting some of the "boy who cried wolf" effect.

As a former EMS EMT, I can tell you that is nothing new. EMS personnel in large urban areas are use to people faking it. It is very common.

Now the Liberian government says the Ebola patient lied on a questionier he was given prior to his departure to the US. He committed a fraud. He lied.

The number of folks this person put a risk has increased to 100.

So, the Liberian Government wants him back?
    For form fraud.

I think the world can expect to see more folks like Duncan. The question is what will the world do about it?

    Send him back immediately.
Form fraud is a bad offence.

True. And there are flights out of Dallas to Africa several times a day. (Need to connect in JFK and Madrid so we shall hope he doesn't sneeze!)

Well I don't think we want to reward folks for acting irresponsibly and recklessly thereby endangering others. If Zmapp were available it should go first to people in Africa and not to Duncan. Two, if he survives, he should be deported. Three, we really need to build healthcare facilities in the African countries afflicted with this disease.

I understand some European countries like France have cut off all flights to and from the region. The American government believes that will exacerbate the problem. I'm not sure, but I'm leaning toward the French on this one.

Saudi Arabia has banned hajj to people from West African countries afflicted with Ebola.

    Wise. But is it pious?

Dallas is a five-hour drive from here. I worry, because this is Texas, and mostly Texan healthcare. Even though the CDC has a team here..

This is a case where piety is trumped by safety.

If it's not possible to send him back to Liberia, he should be sent to New Orleans.
