    I read that in the Middle Ages only uncivilized people ate their food raw, like animals. This was even for fruit and veggies.

    and lots of sauces to cover the taste of meat turning bad.

    Yeah, they did have fire. They also liked to age meats before cooking. They would typically hang a duck by it's neck until it rotted enough to fall off, then it was ready for cooking.
