Oh I agree that making the child stand in the corner is a far better solution than spanking.
Physical abuse only burries anger, but making that child do something and obey really frustrates him and he doesn't want to repeat the experience.

If someone disturbs the martial arts class he gets 20 push ups, if he complains he gets 40, a further disturbance is worth 60, then 100 push ups, if he ridicules over somebody, he gets to stand on his fists the whole class and is a laughing stock for the whole group.

Any way, since you seem to be knowledgable in this, for how long do these children have to use the drugs if they are given them and what are the side effects?

i was reading an article about this a few days ago actualy. it was a reference to a medical journal study, about an english doctor who is contesting thousands of claims to minor defects like ADD and depression etc. claiming that many doctors worldwide are giving out diagnosis for these conditions way too quick. getting real problems confused with human emotional positions and fluxes.

he gave many examples, one of them was that people are told they are dpressed, when they are simply just sad for extended periods of time. or some are insecure due to society and are told they have a condition. people have a mid life crisis and told they are depressed and are having a break down.

many many simple factors are over-looked, he also said that giving children medication and pills, is not usualy the best way to go in many situations. he said that many alternative natural things exist that can help conditions. doctors are too quick to hand out tablets and say "take these". many people also take advantage of this to claim government and tax payers money. claiming to have a condition to get benefit money, depression can score you housing points and many people do it. usualy women.

he said much more than i just typed. but i cant remember everything. but it all revolved around this subject. he didnt say it was any kind of conspiracy, but he did say it was not proffessional and at times unethical to pass diagnosis so fast and hand out pills to kids, especialy when it could be a simple emotional dissposition.

    peace.

physical punishment works, most of the parents of today dont spank. and society has got worse, the youth are out of control. running around stabing and shooting each other. 11 year old kids getting shot in the neck in broad daylight by other 11-13 year olds.

you dont have to be aggressive or nasty when you punish the child. just a simple clip around the head is enough. dont pay attention to the child with thought out punishment, dont even acknowledge him with speech and blah blah blah, making him think you care. dont even look at him just smack round the head and continue what you are doing. we are pack animals, animals that are grouped with family have to show physical dominance, like lions, monkeys, wolves etc etc. you have to be alpha and show the child not to fuck around.

to me all of that stand in the corner stuff is stupid. how hard is it to stand still? its hardly a punishment. now if you got him to stand in the corner on 1 leg with 1 bucket of water in each hand while punching him in the gut, thats a punishment. but i would expect my son to do that for fun anyway, and wouldent issue it as punishment. i would just smack him.

    peace.

In Latvia and Poland (I speak for these countries because I know them) some 40 years ago and earlier it was quite common to make children stand with straight backs and bare feet on dried pease for maybe 5 or 6 hours.

I don't think that actually injuring a child is a good idea.

Oh no. That shit was effective - physical pain meant very little to me as a child, but enforced boredom? Couldn't stand it.

I think violence is a social problem that will not necessarily be solved by disciplining kids - having shit economic prospects, no real future? That's the problem. Well I can speak for Detroit, not London.

Well, then at least Detroit in a few years should have a few good punk rock bands.

The drugs are often (but not always) stimulants and they basically can cause all of the bad side effects any other stimulant can. The short term ones can be insomnia, shakiness, loss of appetite, heart palputations, etc. The longer term side effects can be anorexia, anxiety disorders, heart palputations, etc. Ideally a child recieves some amount behavioral therapy in addition to the ritalin and gets off of the ritalin, at the latest, sometime during their teen years. In other cases they may be on some sort of medication to control it for the rest of their lives. I don't think that is a very good solution in 99% of the cases, and I'd really prefer not giving children stimulant medications. In adulthood it can cause problems with addiction, which is why ritalin isn't approved for use in adults. Many parents get ritalin scripts for their kids so that they can use it, like cheap speed.

What is more concerning to me than the use of ritalin for kids who may not need it, is the use of antipsychotic drugs on kids. Sometimes it's given to kids who have aggressive behaviors or are believed to have "childhood onset" bipolar or schizophrenia (both are EXTREMELY rare and almost always misdiagnosed). It's also used to treat "reactive attachment disorder" (which is often a load of baloney also) Antipsychotic drugs have not been tested on children and, in my humble opinion, are only appropriate for adults with schizophrenia or who are actively psychotic.

Chi- I actually agreed with 95% of your first post, and then you turn around and talk about physically assaulting children...

You sound like your parents didn't smack you hard enough as a kid. No offense, but lighten up.

Oh, we have our own local color. Picture homeless people begging outside multi-million dollar casinos, abandoned train stations within blocks of expensive business plazas. Actually it could be worse here - the economy's showing some signs of improvement.

A parent who is at peace with himself will get a lot further with his children.

ritalin is approved for use in adults, many adults take it, and Antipsychotic drugs have been tested for children because my son takes them,

"childhood onset" bipolar or schizophrenia (both are EXTREMELY rare and almost always misdiagnosed). = not has rare has you would like to think, my son is not misdiagnosed.

it seems to me that a lot of people are just saying how to punish children, and going on about these drugs for children without having much to do with children with these conditions, what i would suggest is "try having a depressed/bi polar/adhd/add/tourettes child for a few days without his/her medication and then you can all say "its all bad parenting, you should smack a child, you should talk to the child, you should ignore the behaviour" those approches with children with the conditions do not always work!

then "those" children DO NOT have ADHD/tourettes/ and so on! anyway she is just a nanny and NOT a child Doctor! if you tell a child with ADHD to stand in a corner they will defy you, they will run around all day, they break things, they walk up to people and bite them (not all of them, my son was an example), break wide screen tv's, not sleep, tablets/medications help with the behaviour because ADHD is a lack of chemical in the brain, and no amount of bloody good nannying will cure that!

What would society do to an adult who did those things?

Community care?? What kind of care? Find out, then you can use that treatment.

No mental homes anymore???? Where do you live? There's nuthouses all over the damned place, and they have padded rooms for the more destructive of the inmates.
