My question is why does American English have such a wide range of dialects?
Granted we a are a massive country. But I see different dialects within the same towns, streets, and neighborhoods. And most of those that have different dialects are from the same area right next to eachother. So how can we have one person that was born and raised next to another yet both speak completely differently?

    Northerners/"Yankee's"
    Southerners
    "Ghetto"/Black
    Gay/Femme
The list goes on and on.

Why can't we all just speak alike? Hell, we are speaking the same language yet I can't understand what some people say half the time! We had different first languages, that would be understandable. But we don't.
