Or, rather, that everyone should be free to choose their own lifestyle: that they should have choice. If some way or other is so perfect as to stymie all opposition, then it should be abundantly easy to illustrate its advantage to the individual. Who could possibly argue against it, if it's so darn great?

Speaking of whiffs...is that hypocrisy I smell?

I wonder if your distaste in being told what to do or not do also applies to apostates? Or the prosetylization of certain religions?

I think that backlash might get worse...

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/07/17/nie.alqaeda/index.html

I think with any subsequent successful attacks, the suspicion towards Middle Easterners living here in the U.S. will grow.

I'm hoping it (backlash) won't, but expecting it might. The first ones failed to materialize, so you only expect worse in the end, really.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. And it sucks to be a minority anywhere. Fortunately most of us have choices. Sad for those who don't, but that's life.

The way I see it, if enough people get tired of the system they change it; but tell them to change it and they immediately seek reasons for sticking to it. All this forced democracy (one torture at a time) makes me gag.

Great. So oppression of non-muslims and apostates in muslim countries - well, that's life, too bad, so sad. "Oppression" of muslims in non-muslim countries - essentially, wearing or not wearing a scarf? Heinous! Arise! Fight!

    And forced religion?

Don't bother responding. Just sort your head out. Thanks.

One death is a tragedy, a hundred thousand is a confidence interval.

This thread was about burkas, veils and such. Not about amnesty international. There are horrible things all over this world.

    ANYWAYS!!!!
why did nuns cover up? Is it biblical?

Modesty; in the Byzantines only women of higher social class and nuns covered their hair or wore a veil. It was a status symbol. An uncovered woman was classified as lower class. Something akin to the powdered wigs worn by the aristocracy. Only a crass woman wore her own hair.

    History:

Even today, in the ME, its a social faux pas to be unveiled in public. Its as acceptable as a statue of Mother Mary in a revealing two piece.

By their standards, Western women have no self respect.

If all they know about America is what they see on TV, I might agree with them.
Its why I like "Stupid Girls" by Pink.

Its ironic in a way, how people look down on the other without even considering that the other might be doing the same.

Why would a woman feel the need to dress super-modestly?

It comes down to her sense of security. If a woman feels that she'll get raped for not wearing wear a burkha, or that society will otherwise treat her with hostility, then of course she'll want to wear one. Personally, I don't give a fuck what other people wear as long as they keep their justifications to themselves.

Thats a luxury only the very rich or very successful can afford (or the hopeless and homeless). Try showing up for a job interview in a speedo. I doubt the would be employers will be convinced

Noboby is entirely free. Theres a thousand page legal code we all have to conform to.

The reason for the burkas is to hide your wife from the evil eye!

It was invented by men...not women.
