Boobies Get Sexier

I think this would give everyone a chance to mate. The males take turns instead of everyone trying every year. Wouldn't this be better for the gene pool?? :shrug:


Male blue-footed boobies that take a yearlong sex sabbatical get a brighter shade of blue in their feet the following year, which makes them more attractive to females, a new study says.

Blue-footed boobies are best known for their bright blue webbed feet. Prominently displayed in a courtship dance, the males blue feet are important in attracting females.

A new study shows that while attractiveness of the blue feet diminishes with age in males that reproduce each year, if males skip a breeding season and don't mate, they displayed a more attractive foot color and had more green chroma....

Why would it be better for the gene pool? Yes, you may have a higher genetic diversity, but "weaker" traits may not get the chance to die out.

 

but don't weaker traits normally die out in the wild? And would a greater genetic diversity be worth any surviving weak trait?

 

Not in todays society, weak people with allot of money can get whoever they want almost. Having money seems to be the thing that women look for more than a sense of humor or kindness, IMHO.

I don't think the size of the booby has anything to do with it. Its the bright blue of their feet. And the less sex they have, the brighter blue the feet are. So the less sex, the more desirable.

 

I think you'll find it's always about the size of the boobies.

Weaker traits normally do. But it's due, at least in part, to sexual selection. Maximum genetic diversity is not necessarily desirable.
