Once again I was banned for 3 days without notice or any alerts in my box. I assume there was an infraction I accrued somewhere but I can't find it. Or maybe a mod was just having a bad day and found me an easy target. Do any others have this problem?

How is it "without notice" when the infraction is right there under the rightmost tab of your profile page?

The rightmost tab on my profile page is "Alerts". There is no infraction there at all.

What is accomplished by banning someone for 3 days? Or banning at all?

Rule enforcement is a prerogative of site ownership. The same economic decision to make elimination of free advertising (aka spam) a value, and to create a space for discussion of scientific topics, also came with expectations of thoughtful, rational, civil conversation between people who want a useful way to model the behavior of phenomena that actually happen. So banning is the throttling or removal of sources of unwanted content (aka noise) according to the communicated aesthetics of the site owner.

Bells PM'd me that she was going to try to get me permabanned. Maybe that's what is motivating it. Make me accrue so many infractions for made up shit that I'm eventually banned forever.
  12. rpenner Fully Wired Valued Senior Member

You mischaracterize this as a issue that Bells has with you. That is not supported by the evidence which is better explained with you having an undue sense of entitlement to flout forum rules and standards.

You have 29 infraction notices going back to 2014, so you are coming across as being slow to conform to the expectations of at least 4 volunteer staff and 1 site owner who have filed them. You have 60 active warning points (most of which accumulated in the last three weeks) which is why you received an automated 3 day ban, and if you receive 40 more points prior to January 12, you will be automatically banned outright. You have been specifically cited for (among other reports of inappropriate behavior/content) trolling, failure to support your claims, intellectual dishonesty and being a undue burden on moderation staff.

Now you have opened this thread on moderator actions directed at you rather than communicate with Bells (who wasn't even the source of the latest infraction notice) or other staff via PM as forum rules require. This begs the question, have you even read the rules?
  13. Magical Realist Valued Senior Member

I know all about my past infractions. Most are wiped clean from my record. Just tell me why I was infracted and so banned for three days. It's a simple request. There is no record anywhere of me being infracted 3 days ago to bring this about. And this doesn't lend much credibility to your unsubstantiated claim that I'm somehow flouting the rules. Seems to me promising to permaban someone in the future, without them even have done anything yet to deserve it, and then banning them with no infraction whatsoever is a violation of the rules. That's called "abuse of moderator power" if you haven't heard of it. And btw, I cannot post Bells' threat to permaban me in my PM's because that is a bannable offense itself. I know you're a rookie mod, but you should know that already.

No, she didn't. What she said was that nobody was going to go to extraordinary lengths to advocate leniency for you any longer... to which you replied that "you don't take anything she says seriously" (of interesting note, you have said that to several moderators AND one of our administrators).

This kind of shit, right here, is why you are issued with infraction points, which accumulate and result in a ban.

Nobody "banned" you for 3 days. You were issued an infraction and, based on the number of points you are carrying, the Forum Software issued the ban.

Knowingly posting false or misleading information
    15. The intentional posting of false or misleading information is unacceptable. This includes posting half-truths, i.e. leaving out relevant and known information to give a false impression.

Do you understand what "false or misleading information" means? Because your current attempts to slander the volunteers of this forum fall into that category quite succinctly.

    13. Appropriate supporting evidence or explanations should be posted together with any opinion, especially on contentious issues. Sciforums is not your personal blog, and should not be used to promote your unsupported opinions.

    15. Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. If you’re claiming that Einstein was wrong, or that evolution does not occur, or that aliens are visiting Earth, be prepared to provide strong evidence in defence of your argument. If you only have an opinion, avoid posting on topics such as these.

    16. Avoid using logical fallacies in arguments.

    Further down:
    12. If you ask another member for evidence, be prepared to read the information that he or she provides for you. Don’t claim that evidence has not been provided just because you didn’t take the effort to read it.

    Feedback and complaints
    • Post general feedback in the Site Feedback subforum.
    • Post matters of general interest regarding site policies and moderation in the Open Government subforum.
    • Complaints about individual moderators should be directed to administrators using Personal Messaging. Do not post them in the public forums.

So... we have shown that you continue to flagrantly violate two quite simple forum rules, right off the bat...

    Add on to this:

    When posting:
    • Start new threads in the appropriate subforum.
    • Do not cross-post.
    • Post on-topic. Avoid going off on a tangent - if you have to, start a new thread.
    • Post personal information at your own risk.
    • Be aware that you may be held legally liable for material you post.
    • Be aware that your posts may remain on sciforums for years to come.
    • Post clearly and coherently.
    • Support your arguments with evidence.
    • Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence.
    • Avoid logical fallacies.
    • Do not breach copyright laws.
    • Do not post private messages to the public forums.
    • Do not expect members to do your homework for you.

Behaviour that may get you banned
    • Personal attacks on another member, including name-calling.
    • Threats.
    • Stalking.
    • Flaming.
    • Hate speech.
    • Posting another member's private information without explicit consent.
    • Posting gratuitous comments or images of an obscene, sexual, violent or graphic nature.
    • Excessive profanity.
    • Repeated off-topic posting.
    • Plagiarism.
    • Knowingly posting false or misleading information.
    • Spamming or advertising.
    • Posting on behalf of a banned member.
    • Trolling.
    • Repetitive or vexatious posting.
    • Interfering with moderation.
    • Propaganda, preaching, proselytising or evangelising.
    • Being a repeat-offending drain on moderator time and effort.
You continuously post extraordinary claims without extraordinary supporting evidence, when asked for said evidence, you routinely tell the requester that you "won't do their homework for them" (despite the claim, and thus the burden of proof, being yours), you don't just use, but virtually base your arguments on logical fallacies, and when someone posts something you disagree with, you use the report function as though you feel you can wield the moderators as some kind of personal weapon (not to mention that you have a penchant for reporting infractions you are issued). In short, you are a massive drain on moderator time and effort.

    Mod Note

You were in a conversation with staff, where we were trying to implore you to change your behaviour or face further moderation that would lead to a permanent ban. I advised that I would no longer be defending you and that if you persisted with the problematic behaviour that was resulting in infractions, I would be recommending a permanent ban (when your points accrued) for a variety of reasons, principle of which included the fact that you had accumulated so many infractions - despite and without counting those that were wiped from your record - your continued and absolute drain on moderator time because your accruing points and the many reports we have to deal with regarding you and how you post, is a clear drain of staff time. Context, reality and truth. These things matter, MR. Giving the impression that I PM'ed you out of the blue to tell you that I was going to try to get you permabanned is dishonest.

My comments were clear and exact. I will no longer fight with staff to keep you here and when asked for my opinion on the matter, I will also recommend your permanent removal if your behavior continues.

No one made you accrue infractions, MR. That one is on you. I was very clear and exact that your current behaviour was not acceptable. I advised you that if you altered how you posted, not what, but how you posted, no issue would arise. In other words, I advised you to stop peddling conspiracy theories and outright lies, as fact and to stop posting debunked articles and so called studies and demanding they are fact and be accepted as factual. I don't think that this is an unreasonable request. It is something that all members abide by. You don't get a special pass on this. If you post lies and declare them as fact, that is dishonest. The rules of this site are quite clear on the matter. If you want to post them, as I suggested to you, acknowledge the issue of what you are posting, point out the issues and don't declare them to be factual when all evidence clearly says otherwise. Again, I do not see how or why you have a problem with this. No one else has a problem with this. Why do you?

I told you that failure to adhere to this very basic request (which is supported by this site's rules) would eventually see you permanently banned and that I would no longer be fighting tooth and nail to prevent that from happening from now on. I also advised you that the only person in control of how you post here is you.

You demanded I do my job, remember? I am doing my job. And that's your issue.

No one is trying to get you permabanned. The only person who controls your behaviour on this website is you. Not the staff, not other members. Just you. We have no reason or motivation to set out to try to get you banned. Personally, I have better things to do with my time. Contrary to what you may believe, I don't sit there and fester fester fester over you or the content of your posts.

What I do notice are the many reports that are flagged either by you, or others about you because of how you post. Telling me to "do my fucking job", acting in an insulting and condescending manner as I am trying to help you, while ignoring the fact that I was "doing my fucking job", then going on and being even more insulting and condescending to staff, is simply making our point. We are doing our job. And that, again, is your issue. You don't want us to moderate you? I don't know about my colleagues, but we would love it if we didn't have to. Change how you post things on this site. Do some research before posting. If something has red flags because of its questionable veracity, actually mention that and do not demand that it is factual and be taken as such.

You know, post in good faith. Again, this isn't an unreasonable request or requirement. Nor is it a hard one.

And insulting rpenner when he is trying to help you is not doing you any favours. Just as it did you no favours when you swore at me when I was trying to help you and encourage you to alter how you posted what you posted, so that you would not be in breach of this site's rules.

You can't even answer my simple question. Why was I infracted 3 days ago to cause be to be banned? This isn't an unreasonable request. Just tell me what the infraction was and spare me your pathetic offtopic rants.

Don't lie. It doesn't help your case at all. You did tell me you were going to recommend that I be permabanned, which is deliberate targeting and abuse of mod power. You always get frustrated whenever you bring up how much you once defended me in the past and I don't suddenly kiss your ass and gush how wonderful a person you are. You are not. You have flamed me relentlessly in the past, lied about things I have never done, infracted me based on broad catch-all rules that could apply anywhere, and even now conspire to get me banned based on something I haven't even done yet. Now, just tell me what infraction was issued to me 3 days ago to get me banned. There is no record of it anywhere, suggesting that as Tiassa did to me once, someone finegled with the points I've already accrued just to get me banned for a longer period. Yes, that really happened, and James R let it happen. Do I sound paranoid? You bet your ass. I've been slandered here, lied about, trolled, banned wrongly and then let back in, had threads started about me, flamed with vicious PM's, had my threads cesspooled and closed for content, and now have to demand you mods do your job AGAIN and tell me why I was infracted. Why was I infracted? And why is there no notification in either my gmail or my mailbox here about it at all? If that is a burdensome drain on you mod's time and energy, then resign from being a mod. It's the minimum expectation we have of all of you---that you address problems like this and resolve them to the best of your ability and that you do your job without prejudice against any member here.

Since you wish to make this public, then why not humor you... - this is from your own (publicly available, I do believe) profile page:

    Warning Date: Monday at 6:26am
    Points: 20
    Expiration: October 17, 2017 at 6:26am
Reason: Continued abuse of the report function and wasting of moderator time

EDIT - edited for format/layout (stupid Latex)
  20. Magical Realist Valued Senior Member

So I was banned because I used the report button? Who did I report and what was the reason for the report? And why is there no notification of this infraction anywhere? Come to think of it, this isn't even accurate. The infraction expired on the 19th on Wednesday not on the 17th.. Someone's doctoring some documents here.
  21. Kittamaru Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Adieu, Sciforums. Valued Senior Member

Again, you were not "banned without warning" - you were issued (yet another) infraction with points, and the accumulated points triggered the forum software response, as outlined by JamesR here. The reason for this was that you attempted to wield the report button as a personal sledgehammer to be used against your detractors.

You have been advised, repeatedly, how to proceed with complaints about disciplinary actions on this forum, and yet you continue to persist in airing your dirty laundry for all to see... and then you wonder why folks are short with you.

The infraction does not expire until next year... the ban the forum software issued expired on the 19th.
  23. Magical Realist Valued Senior Member

So again, who did I report, and why were they reported? And also, why is this infraction for a whole year? I've never heard of year long infractions. That seems made up to me. Like a mod had a hissy fit and had to get back at me for having to do their job again. Also, who issued this infraction? Bells? Tiassa? You?
