its not futureproof unless the upload speed is the same. here i am a stuck with a 256k connection, because spending more than the insane $25EU/month im already shelling out, is just stupid when there is a nationwide 128k upload cap. the 2 main uses of my connection are games and bittorrent downloads, neither of which will get any faster without a good upload speed.

Let's not focus on storing what we can download, but rather, think about the possibilities of multicast media, TV channels, radio etc, or with that bandwidth, on demand streaming services of course.

Not that we need more TV channels, of course!

Yup, we have a few solutions, some with large disk arrays, to take a fast snapshot of data, which is then layed off to tape at a more leasurely pace during the day, and some direct to tape. We have tape robots, enclosed cabinets with many tape drives, and racks of tapes, with an autoloader system.

A database knows which files are on which tapes, so for restores, you just pick a date, and it tells you what it's got on tape, you choose what you want to restore, and it finds the tape, waits for a free drive, mounts the tape, and you get your file. Far better than the days of walking to the offsite storage, opening a firesafe, and carrying dozens of 1/2" reel to reel tapes back to the machine room! (ah, fond memories of long arms!)
