A wrongly deported U.S. citizen who was missing for nearly three months in Mexico ate out of garbage cans, bathed in rivers and was repeatedly turned away by U.S. border agents when he tried to return to California, his family said Tuesday. Pedro Guzman, 29, was picked up at the Calexico border crossing over the weekend. He was released to his family on Tuesday. Guzman was shaking and stuttering and appeared traumatized, his family said at a news conference .... .... The family had been searching for Guzman in Tijuana since he was deported on May 11. They said Guzman told them on Tuesday that he had tried to return to the United States several times but was turned away. (Washington Post) Let us at least take comfort that the hateful policies that led to the deportation of a U.S. citizen have not succeeded in cleansing an American for the sake of racism. And let us hope that the family of Pedro Guzman finds some measure of justice. ____________________ Notes: Associated Press. "Deported U.S. Citizen Is Returned to Family". Please. What hateful policies? Trying to control who comes/goes into our country? This sounds like a bureaucratic screw up, that's all.
If the policies were not framed in such a hateful context, such "bureaucratic screw ups" wouldn't happen. To quote an article from my original post linked above: "ICE only processes persons for removal when all available credible evidence suggests the person is an alien," ICE officials said. "That process was followed here and ICE has no reason to believe that it improperly removed Pedro Guzman." (Reuters) In other words, no credible evidence at all is enough credible evidence to deport a man. That's not a bureaucratic screw up.
