Just a question that came to mind while voting on silver's poll. What does count for cool these days it seems each era has its own views on "cool".

In this generation are you cool if you can this and that with a computer???

Geeks want to think that computers are cool. I even have a shirt that says "stop laughing, computers are cool now". I personally think that a smart person who is witty is cool (ha, my boyfriend) but there are different definitions of "cool" depending on where you are.

I think it depends on the person more than what things they are into. People usually think you are cool if you remain confident in whatever you do, and you have good social skills with whatever crew you hang out with. I think being smart is cool as hell, but there are always exceptions.

HEY!!! Watch where your spitting!!!!!!

Whats so special bout being cool???

Does any1 actualy know what cool is???

Who decided on what it is?? Some one told me it was the Fonz(the children wont know him). If he lived in the days today would he still be cool???

I agree with LVPhysics.
I mean i'm into Science and i'm obsessed with Superman. But im still Insanely Cool.

And that's not me being arrogant....it's just the truth.

Confidence is key to be being cool. But too much DOES make you arrogant.

Not caring makes you cool. Confidence, strength and rashness also make you cool. Standing up for yourself, definitely cool. Intelligence helps, so you know which social cards to play (subtle mockery or punch him in the face?), as does wit.

Being cool is mostly not caring about anything. It's sort of like being a kung fu master. Once you become a master of cool/kung fu, you just no longer care about anything, so you don't ever feel it necessary to obliterate feelings/faces with coolness/mystic eastern powers.

... like the avian flu.

Anyway, coolness often equals being *proud* not to care (and not just not to care).

cool is lesser than cold. Cold being doing what you are doing and fucking everyone over. Cool is one step down, which is doing what oure doing and not caring about other people. Im pretty damn cool. To know if your cool, use the palm sweat test... what makes you nervous?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cool_(African_philosophy)#In_popular_culture

The expression "cool" should be a has-been term, because having an emotionless outer exterior is no longer universally strived for in modern contemporary culture.
Men can cry now.

Cool, varies from culture to culture. Apparently at my school, 'cool' is to hang with a bunch of toss bags who have no value of woman, intelligence or anything else socially morale or acceptable. That and you have to enjoy rap music, be into african american popular culture, fit, attractive etc...

Cool by definition (imho) is to be revered (or just liked in general) by the masses. If this is so, i would consider myself to be cool, and a few of my friends to be cool. But cool as we know it, is to be in close friends with the A-list of people. The one common thing that cool has had with other decades is physical appearence

being a ninja makes you cool.wesley snipes being a ninja in a film has never happened because the world would end at such a marraige of the cool.

a person is cool when he/she dont fucking care if there cool or not.
also you gotta look cool not bieng an asshole here or saying anything but with teenagers and shit, regarding "cool" (not that anyone in my area says the word cool in this meaning but whatever), if someone is an ugly ass girl or boy they wont be so popular and wont be seen as cool. but who cares fuck the word cool we dont use that word here we say cool like this like it should be used.

Me- "wasup vince you cool" Vince- "yeah im cool how u been bro"

You've lost the plot man!! it dont matter what the word is, the notion is the same.

But i get your point i dont think in london people other than children care much bout cool, certainly in school i dont think there was anyone described as cool.

Here every one is different so every one sees cool as different so it just doesnt apply to any one.Dont ask how that works it just does take face value.

Probably the reason why i started this thread, it dont exist here in a blatent way. If someone says they are cool they usualy get proven their not, usualy with a slap in the face!!!

I think confidence and comfort in the self creates an aura of "coolness". Very few depressed people are considered to be "cool".

Whoa whoa whoa, there's a whole cult of "depressed people are cool." A ton of sub-pop culture is based around being a loser, distraught with existential angst, and hating stuff (angst, emo, goth and punk).
