So I've always been into fairy tales. It seems like lately they've been getting more attention - sometimes with good efforts, sometimes with mediocre or darn right lousy ones. While I don't expect recent trends to be a major culture-changing sign of new respect for folk traditions or anything, it does cause me to believe that fairy tales might be somewhat on the minds of people other than me, so I'm hoping that this question will actually get some response. For starters, please share what your favorite fairy tale is and why. My favorite has always been Beauty and the Beast. I think that its basic message is something that transcends culture or time period. I also like that the girl gets to do the saving - I'm not a feminist but I do prefer a female protagonist whom I can respect. In particular I like that she's not a warrior-princess type, that she does the saving through more a "feminine" inclination toward compassion, nurturing, et cetera. Plus, the whole semi-imprisoned in a castle with a troubled prince thing? Totally hot.

I had wondered if your comment was meant for me, but didn't want to butt in if it wasn't... I'll give you that Beauty and the Beast involves kidnapping, of a sort, but rape? Only in the some of the more... shall we say intense? ... retellings. The primary relationship in Beauty and the Beast is indeed a bit darker than in many fairy tales, but I guess that's part of what I appreciate about it. If your response was partly due to my "totally hot" comment, I should explain that that was meant a bit cheekily, and not as a legitimate part of the discussion - though I did say it after all, so I've got no complaint. Do you have a favorite fairy tale for comparison?
