P.S.: Since I am an adventurous masochist type, I might give one more try and install LL on the notebook just out of curiosity if it actually works. Don't tell me I haven't tried enough times....

Bottomline: You have to tinker with it (fucking PAIN) to make it fully functional...

"455408 - USB devices are not recognized, Suspend mode seems to be tricky.

435352 - Camera does not work. Perhaps same bug as 455408.

360926 - Wireless driver lacks multicast support."

As long as people build there hardware for windows that will never happen. Might as well be asking for an out of the box edition of Mac OS that can install on any random laptop you pull up.

Its the users fault for blaming the OS for a hardware problem, maybe you you read John link about ACPI and linux, those are the kind of problems that have to be contended with.

Better yet why don't you consider buying linux in a pre-install system considering your inability to deal with installation problems:
- An android phone
- Dell
- System 76
You could always install windows on these systems, well except for the android phones because the hardware will be incompatible, but that of course is OS's fault, right?

 

Syzygys I'll give you a tip so you might just shut up. Lenovo and IBM work 100% flawlessly out of the box. The problem isn't the software...the problem is a mix of your sour intellect and poor hardware.

You know, ignorrant and arrogant guys like you and Electric give Linux a bad name. Instead of trying to help, you talk down to the possible users. That's why Linux NEVER will be for the masses, because it is for virgin geeks, who like to tinker hours installing some hardware's driver or such.

Once you guys can make an OS that actually works with the hardware of the would be user without shitting bricks first, there will be some actual point in using it. Untal that it is a nice shiny toy only...

The trackpad never fully worked, despite me spending hours with Synaptics drivers- the scroller bits on the side never activated, sometimes it didn't wake up after sleep... in fact, getting it to sleep when you closed the lid was a nightmare as well. She tried to install a bittorrent app, but Firefox wouldn't automatically open .torrent files (it took me hours to coax it into doing it), and when she sent an OpenOffice document to the computer labs to print it out on Word, it was messed up.

Basically, you can't install Linux on a friend's laptop and walk away. As soon as they want to do something new, they'll be calling you.

(I tried all this about a year ago with Ubuntu. I'm not saying things haven't changed since then, but I've been sufficiently burnt by my experience that I can't be bothered to try again any time soon)"

P.S.: Now you could make the point that Linux does work with plenty of brands, and that is fine. but the would be users should be aware that their hardware might not be fully compatible with the OS.... Oh but that would be rational!

We have already tried to help you but you have already declared Linux as sucking so I don't see what we can do to help at this point, it seems you much rather complain about it then actually try to implement solutions. Certainly I had problems with windows and my hardware but I did not declare that windows "sucked" because of it.

As for Linux never being for the masses and only being for geeks you still haven't heard of android?

As I said before if you want hardware fully compatible you can get that, fuck dam get a mac already in fact! You seem to pretend windows has never had computability problems even!

Hm, an interesting thing happened to the Broadway... Before Electric's answer (thanks by the way) I googled the problem and the first answer was similar, but didn't work. Then I went for another solution, installing the Start Up Manager. That was actually rather easy and running that I was able to chose whatever I want to be the default OS at start up. This was the boring part.

The interesting part is that in the Start Up Manager there is a choice for screen resolution and it gives me better choices than the 800x600. So I was able to choose a 1024x768 although it didn't work. maybe I need to save it or something. But at least it gave me a choice and HOPE! Maybe, just maybe I will be able to break out of the resolution prison...

Edit: Actually, it did work, but it only sets the resolution for the Grub. (who cares about what resolution it is anyway? you only see it for a few seconds)So I have a perfectly fine high resolution when I make choices in the Grub loader at start up but once Mint loaded it goes back to 800x600. Hm, so apparently the OS does recognize the videocard but there is a problem when they communicate while running Mint. Oh, the beauty of it....

 

I DID it!!! I DID it!!! I am not even sure how, but I was able to change the motherfucking (excuse my french, but Linux makes me swear) resolution and now I have very high just like on XP!!

I actually downloaded probably the correct Nvidia driver and that did it.

Now excuse me ladies and gentlemen, but after about 90 minutes of tinkering, I have to masturbate*!!!

* You might be laughing, but once you have Linux pains solved, the first thing that will come to your mind is touching yourself. Twice!!!
