Plasma TV: suddenly no picture

About three years ago my 32 inch Sony regular tube type TV began behaving poorly. The picture was quite dim and it took about 5 minutes to "warm up" before you'd get a picture. So we went out and bought a 42 inch Toshiba plasma TV as a replacement. I've loved it, until today. It was working perfectly this morning and now when we turn it on there is no picture. No picture whatsoever. There's sound, and the TV is getting power because the little power indicator turns green when you turn the TV on, but no fucking picture at all.

Oh, yeah. The regular tube type 32 inch Sony TV? It's in the basement. Still working just as it was when we bought this replacement (dim picture, long warmup time). But it beats no picture at all. This fuckin' thing is only 3 years old! What's the lifetime on these plasma TV's?

Any ideas out there? Perhaps there's some switch I could flip to turn the picture back on?
 
Try to see if signal from a DVD palyer works. If not call Toshiba Technical Support. We just bought a 60" Plasma which has just one pixel that is flickering green very very bright...annoying as hell...
 
Do you have a Warranty or Service contract from who you bought it from? If so call them for advice.
 
Check the strength of the power coming out of the wall. If it isn't strong enough things like that can happen.
 
We think we solved our problem. When the room air conditioner was turned off and the look temperature went up from 71 F to 75 F, the problem went away tonight.

I tried that. No picture at all. I also called technical support, and they're not open on Sundays.

Sadly, no. I've always heard those were rip-offs.

I did buy one of those fancy power filter/strips that was recommended; but I don't have a power meter or anything. The laptop I'm using right now, though, is connected to the same electic socket, if that tells you anything.

Thanks for the replys. I can see by the label on the back that this TV was manufactured in April of 2006. The damned set is barely more than three years old and I paid like 2 grand for the fucking thing. I did a google search for Toshiba 42HP66 (my model) and this is the number one result:

regretfully, your TV has no doubt developed the same problem as that of many others of that model. It seems that Toshiba has a problem with having fast enough airflow through these TV's and results in components overheating especially if dust creates hot spots or blocks vents. Since the problem could be the YSUS and/or ZSUS and maybe driver boards, the repair is usually between $500 - $700 USD. The factory repair usually includes the technician ramping up the internal fan speed as well.

Always buy Sony TVs. In my experience, [I have owned 3 on three continents], nothing beats them for performance.

It's a "good" deal because it's only 720p - and probably an crappy older model plasma. Why get a plasma? They're losing to LCD and are less reliable (as you've experienced)

Yes, Sony does build quality products. Like I said, the TV this plasma replaced is still working and in the basement. It's a Sony.

I've not seen anything that indicates that LCD's are more reliable across the board, from what I can tell, the Toshiba model I bought was made with an underpowered cooling system that allowed the unit to overheat and break down. As to 720p v/s 1080p, I've got a 1080p LCD in the basement. I've always felt that the increased contrast of the 720p plasma yielded a much better picture. Vibrant colors and high contrast make for a better picture, in my book. Which is why I prefer plasma. Also, plasma is cheaper.

You can't convince me on the picture. Well, I'm going out tommorow and I'll check some out side by side. The only thing that might push me to LCD is if I found out that they are, in fact, much more reliable.
 
No plasma. No LG.

Plasma has very short life span, and it's out of production. You'd get spots with faded colors all over the screen soon.

I had LG plasma and few other things manufactured by them. Plasma died in less than a year. LG is shitty brand.

Buy LCD. Picture quality isn't that great, but it's consistent quality.
 
plazma, our LCD rocks, beautiful piture, no dead cells, compleatly reliable. We have a panasonic
