100% SPOILERS DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN IT

Saw the movie last night. I really thought the movie was great up until we find out that it takes place in an alternate reality. And therefore, isn't actually what it was supposed to be which was the origin of the actual crew. And Sylar as Spock was a little weird.

Thread already started.

Everytime you cross the street and turn left instead of right, you create an alternate reality. The old one is gone. This one is the "real" one.

Are you referencing that excellent episode of Dr Who?

I've seen two episodes of that show and could hardly call either of them "excellent".

Most aren't. But there was an episode called "Blink" that was excellent. Also, there was an episode that featured the universe basically being destroyed because someone turned left instead of right that was also quite good.

I just saw star trek last night.

HoLy ShIt.

Had to be one of the most amazing films ive ever seen and im not even a trekkie.

It is an alternate universe so things are a little bit shaken up, they did that so that hardcore trekkies wouldnt know what was going to happen because theyve seen and read the books or shows.

Graphics are incredibly intense, if they make it in 3-d watch it, it would be even more amazing than.

Although i wish there were some more intense space battles.

It's one of those "matter of taste" situations. I think the people producing the show aim for a certain level of "corniness" that you find either endearing or disgusting. That could be just my imagination, of course.
LoL

I had the same reaction you describe to Stargate, and umpteen bazillion people supposedly thought it was "all that".
(oh, to have peeled that #@$%&*!!! 'logo' off Christopher Judge's forehead...)

Both outstanding examples.

Then again, I liked just about all of 'em. Even the 3 part season finale where they dragged The Master out of mothballs for one more go at conquering the galaxy.

I thought there was some funny humor in the show.

Like
Kirk kept calling this big security recruit "cupcake"

Or when the captain was being lead possibly to his doom, he made spock captain and kirk first officer.

Than the view goes to the bridge where you see kirk in the captain's chair all casual, you see Spock walk in, in the background and you hear, "out of the chair"

I absolutely hated it.
That movie just flipped a giant bird to all the fans, and all those that were used to the funny, yet serious Star Trek V(or is it VI), the voyage home, or first contact,Insurrection, or nemesis.
Seriously. No logic at all, so how does kirk end up as first officer on his cadetship? Kinky alien sex ? The alternate reality thing was just a fucking excuse. And where was the technology ?, Only two places. The ships were also impossibly huge..
Star Trek for me always had some sort of logic to it...

It's like they just wanted to attract younger audiences, so chucked in a bike ride, Vulcan-Human passion, random quirky individuals.. with giant plot holes being torn in the star trek universe. Some attempts at humor.. I just mostly laughed at seeing Harold try and play a serious role.

I could enjoy it as a movie. Just. But as a Star Trek movie. Nope.

Really? I mean my wife and I saw the film. loved it, and are both Star Trek fans from back when there was only the original series. I've alos perused some of the Trek forums, and for the most part even older fans thought it was good. Now you may have not liked it, but I hardly think that you can speak for "all the fans.
Oh, and BTW, "The Voyage Home" was Star Trek IV, V was "The Final Frontier" and VI was "The Undiscovered Country"
And Nemesis? By far the weakest of the Next Gen movies.
I guess you just can't please everyone (or every fan). I remember that there were a number of "fans", that wouldn't accept "The Next Generation" when it came out either. To them, Star Trek was just Kirk, Spock, McCoy etc. Star Trek without them was not Star Trek.

What I am saying is that Star Trek is different things to different fans, and just because this movie doesn't fit into your definition, doesn't mean that it won't fit into others.

Very Well then. I didn't like it. But I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. I grew up with the TNG series and DS9, as well as bits of Voyager.. I guess I miss the technology..

The bridge was waaay too full of "stuff". Both Enterprise bridges (TOS and TNG) were large and spacious and full of open room, this bridge had stuff all over the place and it really looked cramped.

As I understand from the plot, in the future- that is, after ST:TNG ended and Picard was retired, at some point the Romulan homeworld was going to be destroyed by its parent star which was going supernova.

Spock offered to help them with "red matter", which would turn the Romulan sun into a black hole. Spock failed and the Romulan homeworld was destroyed.

In retaliation, the bad guy went back in time to pre-TOS to destroy Spock's homeworld, then Earth and the Federation.

Spock followed the bad guy through the spacetime hole (?) seconds later but he arrived in the past 25 years later.

The bad guy- who got there 25 years before Spock- attacked the Federation and destroyed 7 starships. The 8th starship had Kirk's father on it, who rammed the bad guys and died. New timeline created.

The bad guy when decided to wait in space for 25 years for Spock to come through the hole so he could catch him and strand him on a nearby planet so Spock could watch planet Vulcan destroyed.

I'm sorry man- this is poor storytelling.

I liked the movie and it's nice to see Kirk and Spock as fresh new faces but the story was too jumbled.

It was nice seeing Bones again but Scotty was poorly developed- he walks onto the Enterprise and bam- he's the head engineer.

I absolutely loved it. I am new to the world of Star Trek since I just started watching Voyager and Next Generation last summer. I knew nothing about the original crew beyond that one episode of Futurama. But I really loved it. I think it's the best movie I've seen this year.

My lengthy list of complaints is as follows:

1. Why were a bunch of Star Fleet cadets in some bar in Iowa? Why was Pike?

2. Why was a ship being built in Iowa?

3. How did Nero know he killed Kirk's father?

4. How did Nero know when and where Spock would appear?

5. How did Nero get an awesome ship with weapons? Isn't he just a miner? How does that mining ship become an impenetrable ship? And check out its interior: Did it make ANY SENSE?

6. Did Starfleet really have to send a bunch of cadets to man the fleet? No one else was available? And why send the fleet at all? Didn't they think it was just some natural disaster?

7. Why did they have to parachute (which was ridiculous, how do you parachute from space) to the platform? Why not just blast it with phasers? Or if they are down, why didn't Pike send another shuttle to blast it? And who brings a sword to a gun fight?

8. Why did Nero have to drill anyway? It's a black hole. It doesn't need to start in the planet core?

9. McCoy is older than Kirk. They wouldn't have been at the academy together.

10. Are there really NO competent officers on the Enterprise? It was only the flag ship, and yet, nobody but kids was manning it and Pike kept randomly appointing people to duties.

I really agree with this last part. It wasn't a bad movie, but it was a bad star trek movie (not that many have been good). I'm obviously not the target demographic, and doubtlessly they will love it, but the stuff thrown in here to make them ooh and ah is just pathetic. The parachuting was the worst. . .

Amen.

What did they do for 25 years? How did they know when he would arrive? They could have been waiting 50 years . . . Did no one ever go looking for them? Where did they hide that ship?

Yep. This happened the whole movie. Uhura is given her job on a whim, too.

11. What are the odds of young Spock literally ejecting Kirk onto a random spot on a frozen planet only to land 100 yards from the cave where old Spock is?

12. I remember a TOS episode where a spaceship full of Vulcans was destroyed and Spock had a massive headache "from the deaths of hundreds of Vulcans". Yet no headache when the planet of 6 billion is killed?

I remember thinking to myself about halfway through the movie "this movie just jumped the shark".

1. Why were a bunch of Star Fleet cadets in some bar in Iowa? Why was Pike?
Obviously there was a spaceport there. Why in Iowa? Why not.

2. Why was a ship being built in Iowa?
Maybe the same reason there was a space port there? Low population density. Though I admit that it is strange not to have built in orbit.
I don't know, But apparently he was able to work it out in 25 yrs.
A mining ship with technology from over a 100 yrs in the future, And being Romulan, I don't think that it is unlikely for it to have defenses and weapons
I have to assume that Nero would have just destroyed the Enterprise if it tried to charge weapons, and would have detected another shuttle being launched and destroyed it.
It seems that they used a small amount of "red matter" to initiate the black hole. May be it was the conditions at the core that were needed to initiate the process. But really is it any more far-fetched than other devices used in other Star Trek stories (protomatter for instance)
Well, apparently he started at an older age. When we first meet him he's already a Doctor, and implies that he is joining Starfleet due to a failed marriage. (Incidentally, this was also considered his background in the original series. In fact, the Episode "The Way to Eden" originally was to feature his daughter from that marriage.)

Were there some scientific errors and convenient plot devices? Yes. But you are going to get that with most movies. (I mean really, In "Independence day" they used an Apple computer to upload a virus to an alien ship)

I for one, am willing to excuse the way they contrived to get all the main characters to their customary positions. After all, this is a two hr movie that had to have a plot outside of this, not a documentary biographical mini-series.

I'm all with you and your attempt, but what part of Lenoard Nimoy saying "this is an alternate reality" didn't you understand?

I feel that the 2000's will been know as the decade of remakes, the decade when people really just accepted as fact that everything been done before and chucked originality out the fucking window and master the fart of the "remake". This movie is the next quantum leap in remakes, not only did they bring back the original characters, but they remodernized everything introduce new scifi technologies to the star trek universe (like automated phasor turrets and pulse phasors) it like what the new battlestar galatica was to the old battlestar galactica, oh well I can't fight the death of originality I'll go with it (the new battle star galactic was awesome) the effects were awesome the actions was awesome, the subtitle camp references were funny, it was a good movie and will likely lead to a whole new star trek series and universe with everything rehashed from captain Kirk onwards. I can't wait to see them sodomize the 'next generation' their probably going to never have it happen in this new timeline. I just wish people could come up with new story and new "universes" not just rehash old ones with the latest in modern special effects and film style.

Good! About time! Now you know my pain, everything after the next generation was an affront to decency. Remaking should be banished and fans should castrated, because hey lets be honest it not like your every going to use it anyways.

Because it's dumb that's why.

(Not to mention, why would cadets gather in Iowa to go to San Francisco?)

Look, we're shown frame after frame of how desolate this place is, and then, there is a bar with a bunch of cadets in it and a captain, and what's more, there is a ship-building facility (that apparently you can just about walk right up to without being stopped).

Is it beyond the realm of possibility?

No, it's not.

Is it something small and stupid that could have been fixed, simply by having it happen AFTER Kirk left Iowa, say after a recruiter talked him into leaving?

Yes, it is.

It's sloppy, opportunistic writing.

See the above.

That's a neat way of saying you don't know.

It's a mining ship.

There would be no point to having it armed.

And setting aside for a moment that it had a ridiculous design, size and immensity of the crew (what did they all do?), you need to remember that it took on and bested at least two FLEETS of armed ships, designed for combat with crews trained for combat. That doesn't seem likely to me, regardless of the time difference.

But he missed the guys jumping out of the shuttle right?

Look, you're missing the point.

What I'm saying is that there was no reason for 90 percent of the movie's action if all that was really necessary was to shoot off the drill, as Spock did toward the end, rather easily, I might add. Why attack Nero at all? Just shoot the drill bit off and watch him simmer.

Nope, it worked just fine when Spock rammed the ship at the end. Thus, the movie isn't even following its own logic. Again, sloppy writing from another of Hollywood's so-called talents.

The crappy science I can deal with, it's plot holes the size of trucks that get to me. I hate them. And what's funny, is that most of them are unnecessary, if you really think about it. The only reason they had a "platform"

The problem is it was contrived. The movie could have followed the characters through the academy, seperately, and then really began with the entire crew being assigned to the Enterprise randomly. There was no need to fatalistically keep throwing everyone into their "destiny," a world used about dozen times in the movie.
