Hi everybody. Following the recent banning of a couple of posters, I've seen a lot of comments saying "If these people were banned, then why weren't X, Y and Z also banned? They're much worse." So, here's a tentative proposal. How about the administrators give you all what you keep asking for? We'll have a mass banning of all the people that people don't like. If that's what you want, that is. Here's how I propose it will work: There will be a nomination thread, in which anybody can nominate any other member for banning. This will be a special exception to the normal rule against ban threads. All may participate in the nomination process. Following the nomination process, a vote thread will be started to determine votes for and against the banning of each nominated member. After the voting has ended, any member who receives a majority of votes for his or her banning, and, say, more than 20 ban votes overall, will be immediately and permanently banned from sciforums. Please vote on whether you wish this process to go ahead, as I have suggested. If there is a majority vote in favour of mass bannings in the current thread, then I will proceed with the rest of the process. Comments and suggestions are also welcome. Post them in this thread. I hope this will make all those crying out for mass bannings happy.
this is repulsive, for you to even suggest such a thing. But in a country of Port Arthur massacre, I can see how this all came to being.
I thought of a better way. Just take a survey of who is on people's ignore lists (behind the scenes, using the forum software). Then you just ban someone after they reach a certain threshold.
meanwhile everyone will be sending pm's to each other, to put him and her and this and that on their ignore list.
You should ban people based on the content of their posts. If a certain member complains about a particularly offensive post, that post should be reviewed by multiple moderators and action should be taken. Reported posts should be examined more thoroughly and not ignored, that would encourage a more fair process. Your proposal is insulting to the intelligent members of this forum, or those left anyway.
wow, james is actually throwing his toys out of his pram. do you need a back rub and a mug of hot cocoa?
That's what I think, too. But I constantly hear calls from certain members that people they disagree with ought to be banned. And every time somebody is banned by a moderator, then I hear calls to ban other people as well. So, here's your chance, if you want it.
James, there are 2 points: 1. If this will be applied, what if posters use sock puppets to increase the number of banning votes (to reach 20 votes)? What if you being nominated by members? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

Personally, I believe you are an excellent moderator. The problem are certain moderators such as Skinwalker who deliberately infuriate members and then get them banned. People like BuffaloRoam, OilIsMastery and others should have been banned A LONG time ago. I shouldn't even have to be stating this, its obvious. I am not defending the conduct of anyone, just stating that some posters behave the way they do due to the racist and xenophobic posts against them. Whenever I post on this forum, I have to consistently hold my patience and my dignity in the face of racist and xenophobic tirades against me. Is this what a science forum should be like? The moderators need to make a decision, and you must do this among yourselves. Will sciforums be known as a place where hatred is allowed and intelligent posters are banned for overreacting to this hatred, or will we make sciforums a better place for those who simply wish to learn from others.
And for the point 1, you might say that moderators will know if there are sock puppets. But what if the sock puppets use different computers? Like, one at work, one at home, other at internet cafe? Or what if different person actually use same computers, like maybe the spouse, brother, sister, bf/gf also use same computer or posting from same IP address?
Ok, draq. However, I'm afraid it's too late: I haven't cast my vote yet, I'll see what others will say first, but I hope James will change that into something like 'Plazma or admin & supermods will hold the end decision'.
