This is a thread about the philosophy of fashion.

This intrigues me because I'm an visually orientated person, (typical Libra) and I spend a lot of time pondering the psychological meanings of art...fashion being one of its most basic forms.

Current modes in womens fashions are somewhat unique in human history, there being no other era when when women deliberately made themselves look hideous. Beauty, femininity and an intuitive aesthetic discipline have always been the objective, no matter what cultural style has come and gone...until now.

This I believe, can be subscribed to three philosophical trends from the last three decades:

Can you guess what they are???

    Nice!

The notion of absolute freedom of form, that 'it is forbibben to forbid' is the first trend appearing in the sixties...most noticibly in hair styles.

I couldn't disagree with you more. Ideas about what is beautiful always change, and there is no objective measurement of it. It's also too diverse to many any sweeping statements about, unless you can be more specific. What do you consider ugly, non-feminine, and devoid of "aesthetic discipline"?

    Perhaps not.

Most people can see beauty in every style of fashion whether its from the medieval period, the Renaissance, Edwardian England, etc. etc.

The same is true with architecture - the fashion of spaces.

Within the last few decades however, what is ugly has deliberately been chosen by the collective unconscious as a mode of rebellion or self-loathing.

The most prominent example is the fashion statements of the punks, which has slowly found its way into mainsteam aesthetics.

Thats why I called this thread 'You look good in Rags!'...not that you look good, but that you look fashionable, according to a perverse kind of reverse psychology.

Thats a good point I hadnt thought of...the principle of 'endless innovation', which one also sees in modern art.

No art is justified unless it manifests something new.

An idea that would have been blasphemous to the ancient Egyptians.

nowdays fashion is to copy whatever style or clothes a celeb wears. bunch of clones,

i hate the term "xxxx are back in" wich basicaly means a famous person has worn something out of style and circulation so it means the sheeple are ok to be seen in it again.

    peace.

yeah, they pretty much did. i dont know where half of my clothes come from, and the rest i didnt so much "pick out" as grab, and run to the cash register as fast as i could.....before the capitalist atmosphere made me vomit my soul.

    TDI,
You're a capitalist. You ran to the cash register instead of out the door. That's what capitalism IS.

    Interesting point amigo...

They tend to have perfect faces...trained to appear as cold as humanly possible, but no body to speak of.

Even the stance and attitude of fashion models is shaped by philosophical trends within society.

I quite like the fashion just now. It's alright. Those legging things look quite cool on chicks and fat girls can get away with it.

Guys are cargos and pretty plain shirts. Quite clean looking..

    This is the UK.

Can you be a little more specific, Carcano?

Fashion is a shitty thing, but one of life's grievances. I do my own thing really, but try to look good. I don't just throw on whatever baggy shit's in my wardrobe. I care a little more than that.

I didnt want to be too specific intially because I wanted to field some wide open questions about how social paradigms affect the fashion industry.

Heres another item...I thought today about compiling a list of the worst elements in womens fashion, entitled...

Top Ten Ways Women Deliberately Make Themselves Ugly...in no particular order:

    1. Excessive eye make-up...esp green/purple/blue eye shadow. Hideously whorish!

    2. Lack of a distinct hair style...dont let it all hang out!

    3. Wearing man pants...your're not a man!

    4. Big clunky shoes...or square toes...see above.

    5. Anything made of polyester...looks cheap!

    6. Sticking metal pins in your flesh...anyone with a ring in their nose...deserves to have a ring in their nose!

    7. Denim...makes em look like field hands.

    8. Thick coarse skirt or dress fabrics...garments should cling.

    9. Excessive jewerly...esp large abstract art on chains.

    10. Multi-coloured hair...looks dirty...dye it in a monotone!

    um....no.
communists, socialists, and even backwoods barter tradesmen use a standard of currency to pay someone else for goods.
