With all the talk of plain crashes, I thought this harrowing story that I read at CNN.com was interesting.

Here's more to remember, if you happen to find yourself falling out of the sky. Don't give up!

Reminds me of a story I saw on Discovery Channel or something like that, about a Japanese commercial airliner crash in the 80's or 90's. The maintenance crew forgot to double seal some compartment in the rear and it blew wide open once the plane reached a certain altitude, causing the plane to lose control and fly about wildly in the air. The pilots were able to regain some control by manipulating the thrusts from the two engines, but they still ended up crashing at full speed into a mountain, pretty much just fell out of the air at 700km/h and smacked into the cliffside.

Afterwards there was a huge scandal because, not expecting any survivors, the Japanese government took its sweet time getting a recovery crew out to the crash site. Turns out a helicopter-borne American marine stationed in Japan was the first to spot the jetliner while on a search and rescue mission, and he was the first one to report survivors. As it turned out, despite the airplane pretty much just plunging straight out of the air and into a cliff, there were dozens of badly injured survivors who had been sitting at the back of the plane, so the pancaking of the plane was just enough to make the g-forces livable when they crashed. They managed to rescue several survivors, but it's thought there were a lot more who could have been saved if the emergency teams had known about them and had hurried to the scene.

So what is the best "way" to fall (flat, legs first, other...), if you find yourself ejected from a plane, and what kind of surface would offer you the best "cushion" ?

This assumes you want the highest probability of living.

Stabilize into an arch: Hands and feet trailing behind your navel, as if for a nice relaxed belly-flop. This can cut your speed nearly in half, and you'll be falling at a leisurely 130 mph (or less in floppy clothes). This is why I always fly in a clown suit when my parachute is at the cleaners. Once stabilized in the arch position, pivot your shoulders slightly to turn towards the nearest freshly-plowed marshmallow landfill. Then ease your arms back, straighten your legs slightly, and track toward it. Once in precise position over your plop zone, go back into a relaxed arch, then roll onto your back, in a butt-first arch, and watch the incredibly vivid sky. After landing, avoid vigorous activity- sit up slowly, catch your breath, and walk easy to the nearest bar.
