What career are you in, or if your still a student what career are you looking for (or if you wanted to do something, but didn't get to)? As for me, my first choice would be to physically travel the Universe, galaxy to galaxy checking out planets and enjoying the beauty of the Universe.

But that's not possible, so I've settled down to my other main Internet, explore the Universe of life, Molecular Biology

I'm in college, studying Maths, Biology, French and English Literature for A-Level. I have literally no idea what I want to do when I leave, which I feel a bit bad about.

I have 1.5 jobs. The "1" is: HR manager. The ".5" is: VIP-service-something-or-other at a night club.

    Hehehe. . . you said, "3D computer modeller". . .

Wait. That was, in no way, dirty.

    Damn.

    Well. . . um. . . ever model anything. . . ah. . . naughty?

I did work on a 3D full body scan of Maria Sharipova. She was probably wearing a bikini before it was edited off.

Maybe you don't know me. But. . . ah. . . Maria? Not really the answer I was looking for.

Good question...maybe you have some suggestions.

I'm finishing my Ph.D., and don't know which path to follow. My skill set makes me a candidate for the following jobs:

1.) Business Consultant. Decent salary, lots of travel, dynamic job. Long hours (60-80 a week) at times, fewer hours when not with a client.
2.) Quantitative Financial Analyst. Almost unlimited bonus potential. Consistent work week (40-60 hours). No travel, may have to live in Chicago.
3.) Washington, D.C. Think tank jobs, government consulting (RAND, CNA, etc.) Requires very high level intelligence clearance.
4.) Something else. String---are you hiring?

    Any suggestions?

Yeah. Um. . . you're not doing me any favors. The only reason he's "attractive" is because of his success. If he weren't in the Olympics he'd be some jobless stoner with a fat girlfriend.

Ugh. No. My company had a GREAT fourth quarter. Way better than expected, but we're expecting a bad first half of 2010, then a solid second half. I'm actually fighting a corporate mandate of a 10% reduction in workforce.

Aren't you an engineer or physicist? There's a shortfall of something like 10k engineers and physicits right now. Defense contractors (especially Northrup, Boeing and G.D.) are throwing perks at college student just to attract them from the get-go. I know that Schlumberger (just wrote a resume for a recent grad who worked at my company through college) is looking for PhD level engineers and physicists (though, you'd have to move to Houston).

Talk to Counte. He's done his fair share of internships for the DOD and Langley. The lag time for entry is insane, the pay is terrible and the expectations are very high. I helped place two friends (husband and wife) with the credit union that services the more secretive employees of the CIA and DoD. Both were in tech support. They both had to work at Target for two years before the FBI finished their background check and were granted top secret clearance to work there.

Of course. . . it was worth the wait, considering their compensation, benefits and fricking 8 weeks of PTO.

Well I've never been asked to mold anyone's junk, but the principle is the same.

I'm from Galveston, originally, so Houston might be nice

But, I don't know if these guys want theoretical physicists. The types of people who hire theoretical physicists are looking for advanced problem solving and analytical skills, and typically don't care that I destroy things when I walk into a lab...

    Bullshit.

    Don't sell yourself short.

This past July, my buddy (an LP investigator where I work, and part time National Guardsman) applied--for the fifth time--as a full time position in the Ohio N.G. to be the SSG (E6) logistics coordinator (or somethingorother, like that). He didn't get it every other time because he didn't package his skills right. He was one of those huffy, "I'm a guy and I don't need no help from nobody" type of guys and brushed off my attempts at counsel several times. Finally, I convinced him to let me see his resume and list of accomplishments. To my non-surprised, he--like 90% of the population--had no clue what he contributed to his workplace or how to sell his skills correctly. Long story short: he got the job and now I get to take his poker money every third Saturday of the month (in good conscience that I'm not taking food out of his wife and son's mouth). He went from a crappy $14 per hour job at my company to a full time E6 in the O.N.G plus a sizable housing allowance.

Ben. You've got a frakking PhD in PHYSICS. That's--what?--1/10 of 1% of the population, right? Sell that shit! My question to you is (and this is my stupidity), why push the "theoretical" part of the education? You're a PHYSICIST!!! Don't all physicist understand almost ALL principles of physics and engineering? Don't you already have a significant work history which, in addition to your education, could be parlayed into a 100k career?

Egad man. Email me your resume and work history. I'd love to take a look. I get so few PhD level people (okay. . . none)! Placing you would be a cinch.

While I do understand what it takes to do experiments (R&D, etc.), it's not something I really want to do. I like problem solving on a theoretical level, and I don't like to work on the same things for very long. This is why I'm currently leaning towards the business analyst route (Booz Allen, McKinsey, Accenture, etc.)

I don't know, never really had one. I'm studying now, psychology and criminology, but considering my humongous track of exteme failures, this won't probably lead to anything either.
