Does anyone know why the Southern Cross seems to be treated as a possession of Australia instead of something that is shared by the Southern Hemisphere?

'cause Australia's the only thing that matters in the Southern Hemisphere, of course!

Wow, for such a lofty and intellectual website, that was the most puerile response imaginable, Pete. I am considering calling my company Southern Cross Safaris because our area of expertise is Southern Africa, South America and the South Pacific. Of which, Australia is a relative 'yawn' in terms of experience. Lovely, but relatively boring in terms of real experience. Is there an intelligent person available who can answer my question?

Thank you for for humourless response.

Let me spell it out for you:
I suggest that anyone who does, in fact, treat the Southern Cross as a possession of Australia, is just as likely to think that Australia is the only thing that matters in the Southern Hemisphere.

Who in particular does your original question refer to?
Who do you think treats the Southern Cross as a "possession of Australia"?

Humor is funny, Pete. Stupid is boring. To think I was embarrassed to submit what I thought might end up being a stupid question, only to receive an unbelievably stupid remark like that. But at least your second response sounds a bit more intelligent! Honestly, I am just trying to find out if there is an astronomical answer to why it is that every time I discuss the proposed name of my company, it seems to lead people to think of Australia first and foremost, and never the rest of the vast and beautiful countries that comprise Southern Africa and South America.

In addition, if you go online and search for 'Southern Cross,' what you will find are countless companies associated with Australia - hence the question.

This is the first time I have ever posted anything to an online forum. I'm sorry if I am not observing good etiquette by returning your humor! I appreciate your taking time to respond. But, honestly, what do you think? Is it for the same reason that when you say the words ' red, white and blue' , the world thinks of us and not the UK, France or Belgium - just because it has always been used that way?

    I see!
Please accept my apologies for any perceived stupidity/arrogance/any other annoying communication habits.

I guess it's because the Southern Cross appears on the Australian and New Zealand flags.

There's also a self-perpetuating meme involved... if a few Australian companies include the word "Southern Cross" in their name, then the name becomes associated with Australia, so more companies/clubs/etc use it, and the association builds.

It's important to realise that it's not the constellation itself that's been self-selected as Australian, but the symbolism of the name.

Thanks Pete. I thought that was the case, but it frustrates me because it is the perfect name for our company, though, not if it is perceived incorrectly. Thanks very much for your time, I really appreciate your input. Back to the drawing board for me!
