With the alarming frequency and out of control pirate attacks around the coast of Somalia, the recent US intervention to safeguard its citizens on the Alabama was quite admirable. It seems other nations do not want to risk the level of confrontation we saw from the US.

Which is the best way forward to stop this unacceptable predatory piratical activity?

    The most recent activity:
Undeterred Somali pirates hijack 3 more ships

The basic problem in Somalia is social instability.

    My suggestions:

    1. Stop arming and funding Ethiopians to kill Somalians esp the airstrikes

    2. Stop funding militias

    3. Support the transitional government

    4. Invest in job creating infrastructure development

    5. Invest in educational institutions and encourage scholarships for young people

i agree with sam, you wont stop piracy until you get both law and order and essential services and stabilisation of Somalia

More victims of US imperialism. They should just stay out of Somali waters. How dare we claim it's our ocean. Somali sailors have been living and fishing there for thousands of years.

    lol
That article is so full of hilarious hyperbole and conspiracy theories, it's hard to take any of it seriously.

You'd think a global conspiracy to both steal fish and dump nuclear waste wouldn't be occurring in the same place, you know?

Its international fucking waters! anyone can sail through it! Just because it off the coast of somalia does not make it somali (now fishing rights is a whole different story).

Many nations have been sending in warships to deal with the piracy, but in general I agree its like a band aid for a severed arm, the piracy is a symptom of the problem and trying to cure a symptom is not going to cure the disease.

Because corporations care about feeding polluted fish to people?

I have to agree again, that article is fucking tripping balls! Where did it come from were are its source. Has any studies been done to test for radiation or toxic chemicals, and why haven't the Europeans started to glow from all these supposedly radioactive fish they have been stealing!

You'd think the geiger counters going off at customs would be a giveaway.

That, and the part where it's some sort of massive conspiracy where the dumping and stealing are done by concerted agencies. Corporations care immensely about their product being damaged. Corporations are often the driving force behind finding solutions to environmental problems when they're losing profits. You'd think irradiated fish would be losing them profits, yeah?

I think its quite revealing that the "pirates" never harmed any crew members, but the Americans shot and killed the pirates.

I guess it would surprise you sam, since you come from a culture where god likes it if you behead your hostages, right?

It's also "revealing" that none of these pirates have blown themselves up. I wonder if not killing hostages has anything to do with their interest in self preservation?

I wonder how that will play out if they now escalate the violence.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6719091.stm
    http://english.horseedmedia.net/news/5591.shtml

Notice all these European fishing boats?

Here a general story on it:
    http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/04/14/somalia.pirates/index.html
    Note
    1) no fishing boats form Europe
    2) ships carrying cargo, even food aid for Africa
    3) pirates attack everyone, Lebanese cargo ship, Egyptian fishing boats, Greek bulk carrier, America cargo ship, etc, etc.

Hey what do you know that guy us just high and not tripping balls.

    Roman,

Live hostages are worth more then dead ones, their not terrorist they are pirates: doing it for the money.
