LA PAZ, Bolivia (Reuters) - Bolivia's foreign minister says coca leaves, the raw material for cocaine, are so nutritious they should be included on school breakfast menus.

"Coca has more calcium than milk. It should be part of the school breakfast," Foreign Minister David Choquehuanca was quoted as saying in Friday's edition of La Razon.

The new leftist government of Evo Morales, Bolivia's first indigenous president, has vowed to promote the legal uses of coca, the plant used to make cocaine, which is revered in Andean culture and is commonly chewed or made into tea.

Morales, himself a former coca farmer, has pledged to fight the drugs trade but at the same time protect the cultivation of coca in Bolivia -- the world's third-biggest cocaine producer after Colombia and Peru.

A coca leaf weighing 100 grams contains 18.9 calories of protein, 45.8 mg of iron, 1540 mg of calcium and vitamins A, B1, B2, E and C, which is more than most nuts, according to a 1975 study by a group of Harvard University professors.

Not only that but it makes a nice soothing tea, they have it free for all passengers arriving in La Paz to help adjust to the altitude(3.600 meters above sea level).

Now if only they'd also chew hemp seeds as well, they would make all the anti-drug looney's that have no idea what they're talking about go even more nuttier.

I would be sceptical of his claims, there's alot of money involved.

We market caffeine to our children. Coca leaves--not refined cocaine, a European invention, and certainly not further-refined crack cocaine, the triumph of American black-market ingenuity--are no more addictive or harmful than cola drinks, and at least have some nutritional value.

Take it from someone with first hand experience, you want to meet the devil do cocaine.

i was at the brink of death at least three times maybe more, i can honestly say that at the time dying didnt really mean much and if i wasnt at that point it only meant i didnt do enough blow. Your body literally shuts down, i would get so high i couldnt even piss.

i started when i was 16 and spent 10 years doing it-almost every day, i know as much about it as anyone.

two of my best friends died from smoking it and one guy i knew real good was shot in the head because he wouldnt sell it to the druggie who pulled the trigger.

deceptive drug that it is, in the beginning its a clean high but after a year or two its all down hill. thats how it sucks you in - in the end its a real horror show.

I would bet powdered cocaine has its roots in Columbia NOT the U.S., and as long as there are coca fields there will be people packaging it into little bags of misery. As someone here allready said theres too much money in it.

anyone reading this messing with coke believe me your no differant and before you know it your in a struggle for you life.

been clean for two years now for me like most alcohol is the precursor.

up all night sleep all day....i know what your doing

, but I came back from it. everyone deserves a second chance- i deleted the middle finger post in case you thought i directed it towards you- it was pretty dumb anyway. and wish you nothing but the best that much is true.

Theres people in this world really suffering we should all try to help them doesnt matter where your from we are all the same. I know one thing- theres no future in being a tough guy.

The main thing is we get to make our own decisions weather theyre wrong or right. Life is beautifull thats what i learned through it all.

Ugh. No. Why does everybody think that?
Chocolate comes from the cacao bean. Cacao. Not coca.

    Hey. Here's something interesting:
"The Coca-Cola Company buys 115 tons of coca leaf from Peru and 105 tons from Bolivia per year, which it uses as an ingredient in its Coca-Cola formula (famously a trade secret). The cocaine itself does not end up in the drink nowadays, however, and is generally sold to the pharmaceutical industry where it is used for various surgical procedures."

I thought the coca was no longer part of coca-cola. I guess they must process it to remove the cocaine instead.

    TRUTH-

It was isolated from the coca leaf in the 19th century by a German Scientist. It was used in a number of tonics, it was soon banned.

Sigmund Freud wrote an essay entitled Uber Coca ("On Coca"), seems he was a pretty frequent user till the obvious side effects took hold. Like violent fantasies, attributed to its effect on electrical impules in the brain and the release of chemical messages blah blah blah.

Alas, my posts above can be attributed largely to creative imagination. I really like this part "you want to meet the devil do cocaine." I can say it is very dangerous, deceptive and not much fun.

I know someone who due to frequent use would walk around screaming, mostly making noises like eeeeuuuuuoooowwwww and such. Last I heard he cleaned himself up and is perfectly normal....go figure. Aaaaahhh the human marble.

Although its effects on the heart i would think are not reversible.

Well im back from vacation and getting into attack mode
