When I was a kid I saw a 1950s or early 60s movie that had a giant robot that looked like a box on four legs, it was done with some sort of early animation composited on to live footage. It was bizarre because the legs of the robot only moved up and down like pistons and yet the box slash robot was somehow propelled horizontally. This giant robot rampaged across the desert squashing any hapless fleeing Mexican who happened to find themselves caught under the piston like legs of this huge box robot. My question is what is the name of this movie?
So bad its good No this one had four legs, it looked like an oil refinery had gone walk about. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Dang so I guess this isnt him, huh? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Maybe this giant robot, from the 1957 movie Kronos: Ravager of Planets, is perhaps the very best of the abstract giant robots. And by "abstract," I mean Kronos here looks basically like a modernist building — just a big box on giant struts with a spherical head topped by two antennae. Lost Robot Found! Yay! You found him, he attacks power plants in Mexico, draining them of their energy. Now I've got to get the DVD. Thank you for that. wasn't Kronos the robot in The Incredibles? Hmmm, maybe the writers were fans of this older movie as well. Kronos film trailer
Kronos the Piston legged Box Robot wants your electricity. “From the Mysterious reaches of Infinitely! Emerged a monster such as human eyes have never seen! “ Even V2 rockets couldn’t stop him! Now the real crocks of the question is why does robot constructed out of shoe boxes, toilet roll middles and a bunny ears TV antenna have more acting ability and charisma then Tom Cruise? I seem to remember that Cordwainer Smith wrote a story about a giant human formed robot, a little V2 shaped rocket and an ominous huge black box being sent to a planet to destroy some threat to the “Instrumentality of Mankind” This black box was a designed to suck up all the energy of the sun if the robot and the rocket ship failed to destroy the threatening species. I see a parallel here with Kronos. The idea of energy sucking mechanical behemoths must be ironic to anyone who drives an SUV. The book it was in is called “Quest of the Three Worlds” and the story at the end of this book and is called "Three to a Given Star"
They seem to get the inspiration for the name from Greek mythology. "Cronus or Kronos (Ancient Greek Κρόνος, Krónos) was the leader and the youngest of the first generation of Titans, divine descendants of Gaia, the earth goddess, and Ouranos, the sky." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cronus
