One such method of which came to mind that inspired me to start this thread is a method by which a person deliberately taunts another with a falsehood that implies the derogatory. Example: Man goes up to a woman who is obviously trying her best and asks: "When did you decide to make yourself so ugly" I was interested in finding out if there is a specific term used by professionals for describing this sort of abuse. Possibly other posters may have other forms of verbal manipuations and intimidations they would care to discuss. Alternatively someone may have a link to resources that deal with verbal intimidation, emotional entrapments, interogation techniques for procuring information, legal : leading the witness type complaints etc
It seems to me to stem from low self respect and a way to compensate for a low self image that needs to be boosted by shinning a disparaging light on someone else.
Perhaps one term that might accurately reflect methods of intimidation and manipulation would be 'Relational aggression'. In the workplace and in social settings, there are those who manipulate openly, and those who operate below the radar. The short video at this link is good for a giggle. Gee, that type of comment would be something I would term "suicidal tendencies" as it could be an intro to serious interpersonal violence. Of course, you must take into consideration that I live in a very violent metropolitan area with many racial and ethnic subcultures. The only way we can all get along is to be nice to one another. Those who do not do that get shot. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! Girls as well as boys, children as well as adults. That is just how it is here. agrees! Do you think it is about stealing something from someone else to prop up a failing self esteem? Sort of "ego rape"?
Video was great! Thanks... yes relational aggression could be used as a generic do you think? I am surprised that given the extensive use of this form of abuse there is no actual "abuse genre" label so to speak that I can find. The bait and then punish routine shown in the video was quite good and very common. Yet quite a mild form as well. Just recently I met a person [ a female ] who seemed to be obsessed with using this sort of abuse to the point of the ridiculous and was obviously suffering somesort of mental distortions of a clinical variety. Example of dialogue: "So when you eat you dinner offthe floor how do you feel?" A presumption firstly that I eat my dinner off the floor and a claim to wishing to be empathic with sympathy at the same time. the whole conversation just about, was utilising this sort of stuff...a form of "vitriolic" point scoring perhaps? hurt then be caring? sort of thing....typical of domestic violence I would think. "Deliberately with premeditation knock someones teeth out and then say sorry for doing so"
