    Hiya,

Wondering if anyone here can help:

It's a film that's been driving me nuts trying to find the title of, and I can't recall if it was a short to boot.
Basic recall is of a stranded astronaut. Last scene is nocturnal, on a beach, and he looks up at the stars and finds that he's in a different solar system, and he realises he's alone. No hope of rescue.
Not sure if some sort of tentacled creature wiped out the rest of the crew, but there was probably 'something in the water'...

I've gone through the 'List of science fiction films' in Wikipedia for the 80's, 90's and 2000: Nothing rings a bell.

Fairly 'moddern' feel to it, so probaly a 90's film/short.

    Any ideas?!

    Cheers,

    Luis.

Its been awhile since I have seen it but....maybe the original russian movie "solyaris"? Then again that was a 70's movie so probably not.

No, more recent than that I think (and not in Russian, not the remake either!).

    Cheers,

No luck so far. I had a look at 'The quiet Earth' but this isn't the one either.
    Might be a short...

    The search continues!

    Cheers,

    Luis.

I'm pretty sure it's an episode of the new "Outer Limits" tv series that came out a few years ago.

Season 2 of the new "Outer Limits", Episode "Worlds Apart". Bonnie Bedelia was the marooned guy's love interest back on Earth, if that rings any bells.

That's the first thing I thought of as well.

That sounds close! I'll look it up on the net and see if it throws up any memories.
BTW: Does it end with the stranded astronaut in an alien 'lake/pond'? Was the creature he was being hassled by in the water?

    Cheers,

    Luis.

    Warning Spoiler!

From my recollection (several years old), there is a critter in the water that plays a huge part of the storyline. Some sort of giant squid type thing. All you ever see is a tentacle or two every so often. The general story is that the astronaut leaves Earth on a solo mission, leaving a girl behind without settling things between them (whether they were breaking up or whatever). It was supposed to be a long mission but I don't recall to where. Contact with Earth is lost very quickly. Like ten years later Earth receives his distress signal through a newly discovered worm hole. His ship fell through the wormhole and crashed into the ocean of a far distant planet. He's in a life raft, and being hassled by the squid thing. (It may not have been a solo mission. But he was the only survivor, or any crewmates are eaten by the squid early in the show. I _think_ it was a solo mission.)

Turns out they are able to talk back and forth across time through the wormhole. For him it is only a few weeks but on Earth many years. His old girlfriend is married and now the head of the Space Agency. In an interesting twist her husband is a marine biologist who figures out that an animal the size of the 'squid' wouldn't consider something human sized to be food, and the astronaut survives by grabbing the radio and a couple other things and swimming for shore. As the squid eats the raft he reaches the shore in safety.

A rescue/supply mission is attempted but the wormhole is unstable so it fails. All that's left to do is for the astronaut and his former girlfriend to say goodbye. As the wormhole collapses and communication is lost, one of them (I think the astronaut) plays a recording of 'their song' to the other. Some old romantic ballad ("Someone To Watch Over Me" maybe, don't recall for certain).

The overall theme is that of choices. Like if you want to explore strange new worlds, it isn't really practical to also try for the white picket fence and 2.5 kids. The final scene is of the astronaut looking over the vista of sunrise on an entire alien world to explore, which being honest with himself he has to admit is the choice he would have made anyway, over life with his girl.

I think that just might be it! Mate of mine has an Outer Limits collection, so I'll have to pop round and see if he's got it.
    I'll let you know!

    Really appreciate the feedback!

    Cheers,

    Luis.

    <drum roll!>

Bingo! Thanks for finding it, it definitely was "Outer Limits" episode "Worlds Apart"!
Now I've got to figure out why it stuck in my mind like it did...

    </drum roll!>

Glad to help. It was one of the more memorable for me as well, not sure why either. Did you notice what song he played near the end? I was thinking it was "Someone to Watch Over Me" but I wasn't sure.

    Hiya,

Apols for the late reply, but yes, it was 'Someone to watch over me'.
