So, Is it ? Recently a friend of mine, got surpassed because he wasn't familiar with the upper ranks of his job, Needless to say, He was qualified more than the other guy, But still got passed over ? .. This example is just one of many, and only serves to cement that It's not what you know, It's who you know.
Of course its who you know. They want someone they like and trust. I've been bumped ahead of people who have been there longer than me and they trained me. Its because of personality issues.
Its depend on the culture. In some country with caste system, its about what is your heritage. People in Nepal have certain quota for certain caste in many fields of job. Only in a perfect market competition its about who you are.
Being a skilled worker in the trades I found that I could get a job anywhere for what amount I wanted. Because of my licenses I carried and my expertise in the trades I knew I was in demand. Whenever there's a shortage of skilled workers you'll always get what you want, within reason. So by saying that I think its what you know at least in the trades more than who you know.
It should be; but realistically it never is. It's all about making money which makes personality and things like charisma far more important. Also it's worth noting how companies use buzzwords like 'loyalty' and 'teamwork' that only have meaning when it suits the employer. Welcome to the world of capitalism.
that makes sense, it depends on the profession too. Professions where your expertise is less crucial or a dime a dozen, people will promote who they like. Doesn't mean it's right because it ain't. The more technical your job is, the greater protection you have against interpersonal politics being the factor in job security. there is a lot of corruption out there, a lot. you learn fast that it's not just about doing your job but your job has a lot to do with wiping other's ass and soothing thier insecurities and ego. like people don't get enough of that burden and drama with friends and family. it's annoying when people get personal in a work environment but it's like that way too often. Ughh

Just by one person. She complained and complained about a task she had to do. They gave it to me. They finally had to tell her if she didn't stop hounding me about how wrong I was doing it, she was going to get written up. She didn't want to do it, but she didn't anyone else to do it either. I have learned as long as you make your boss look good, you will be rewarded. I have been lucky to have good bosses. My smallest raise was 10%. I have seen some animosity about that. But I'm not a whiner, a tattle tale, or abrasive. I make my bosses job easier, not harder with petty crap. And I don't need to be baby sat. Its like Dwight on Office. He's very good at what he does, but OMG!!! Who wants to work with that?? Personality counts for A LOT!
I've seen people passed over, despite their superior qualifications, because they didn't fit in with the folks they would have been working among in the new job, or they were not suited for it in other ways. Sometimes that's good, sometimes it's bad. If it doesn't involve nepotism, racial stuff, or gender, it's probably good. It's what has to happen, if people are not to be promoted out of their best employment - but a wise operation would find a way to pay people who do great work, without "promoting" them.
I was thinking that.. Somewhat like, Welcome to the matrix... LOL. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
thats the thing, If its not knowledge and ability but merely personality.. Isn't it still wrong ? and does more to harm the company ? .. I wish we all worked in these "wise operations" ..
