I looked up top 100 songs a few months back. Only two of which were rock. My question is: is Hip-Hop overated?
It's fun to dance to. I find techno very annoying. Getting old? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
Non-sequitur. The fact that hip-hop sells better than other pop music doesn't imply that anyone rates it highly, in any absolute sense. It's just that it's more appealling than the picked-clean cadavers that are rock and pop-country.
I see your point. But I don't beleive it should bedominating over rock and country. Its almost discriminative. Rock has produced a lot of good hits. Are they up there?
It is a taste issue. So however it rates cannot be overrated. Unless you mean people don't really like it but there is a conspiracy to make that stats seem like they do. But then the issue is not overrating. It's like if you do a poll of 4th graders at some school and 90% say they like chocolate better than vanilla, you can't tell the kids chocolate is overrated (by them). By definition they are correct.
I'm saying its a little weird its been on top for so long, when there is so much good rock. Hip-Hop sounds all the same, repetitive
That's the key point. Hip hop sounds all the same to you. Your taste and interests. Play a bunch of rock songs to people who aren't so into it and they all sound the same to them. Classical music, same story. And look, I love rock. I like hip hop and some of it I really like. But rock is my home. But if hip hop is more popular now, then it is not overrated. Just more people have a different taste. If it is not more popular, than someone is messing with the polls.
Hip-Hop has taken nose dive in the last ten years. It became so popular that it all started to become cliche'. I used to enjoy rap and Hip-Hop, but now I refuse to listen to any of that bullshit they play on the radio. It's all a joke. Mainstream music sucks.
It depends who's doing the "rating". I like rock and I consider myself a metal-head more than anything, but I also like a lot of hip-hop. It certainly has it's place. It's way more fun to dance to hip-hop, and party with it. Hip-hop serves it's purpose, and so does rock. There is no overrated or underrated, only different tastes in music.
Your right. I guess when you look at it, it is just a matter of opinion. But when was the last time rock was on top? Can anyone look that up?
I don't think you can label an entire genre as overrated or underrated, since music is all about personal preference.
