Transcript of Cheney’s 9/14/92 speech to the Detroit Economic Club, as reprinted in the Washington Post, 9/15/92 Holy freaking hell, can you believe this?
I like this one: How long is that government likely to survive without U.S. military forces there to keep it propped up?
How long were we in Germany and Japan? How long have we been in South Korea? How long were we in the Phillippines? Baron Max
Here Cheney say it himself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHrH...ey-says-ousting-saddam-is-a-bad-idea-in-1994/
Iraq is not Japan or Germany, nor were they even a threat to the US the way those regimes were. Most government institutions were retained, and rebuilding was performed by local companies, keeping the money in country. Also, the cultures were more uniform, no sectarian violence.
Explain to me how Germany was a direct threat to the USA prior to the declaration of war by Germany. I think it's really easy to make excuses like that, Spider, but when the dust settles, it's not much, if any, different .....other than the politics and politicians. In World War II, we didn't take any shit and we bombed the livin' shit outta Germany and Japan, and we didn't give one rat's ass about "innocent" civilians or what they thought. And .....we won those wars! Baron Max
We won the war against Iraq, too, after bombing the livin' shit out them. Easily. It's the occupation that seems to be having some trouble.
Maybe because the same plans that went into rebuilding germany and Japan (which is why they became US friendly against the USSR) such as the Marshall Plan. The US wouldn't need to have this many troops on the ground, if it went with the already built template.
It's pretty lame to even compare Iraq and WWII, but if we were able to surround Germany with international cooperation and own their airspace like we did with Iraq after the Gulf War, there wouldn't have been a WWII.
No, Spider, you, as well as others, just don't like it that Germany and Japan were pounded into dust and forced to accept the terms of their conquerors ......by force of military might. ...so you call the comparison "lame" as if that changes anything. Baron Max
hilter did not want to go to war with the us. neither did the japanese pearl harbor was a gamble that failed
No, he didn't ....but he wanted control over all of Europe ...and while we were all "talking", he accomplished most of it!! And you still want more "talk"? Baron Max
Presumably Cheney was thinking at the time that the Iraqi Government would fall as soon as US troops moved out. Maybe he doesnt need to worry about that now, seeing as US troops will be in Iraq indefinately.
Spider, your concern about hypocricy, however out of date, is admirable. Too bad it doesn't translate to certain other threads...
