The founding father of the EU, is scared of his creation. Frenchs voted for no, though the votation was too close to call. Chirac now is bowing down his head in shame, as the famous chauvisnism can put and end to the dreams of an unified Europe http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4592243.stm
Chirac loves to do this kind of mistakes... Why did he trust that they would answer the good question? It's not "No" to Europe : it's "No" to Chirac! Of course it was the most democratic way to ask a so important question but he should have thought that most of the French are stupid (I'm in the other part Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!). As I saw a few months ago in a far far far away country : SORRY!
May be Chirac took a calculated risk rather than getting a beating in elections for ratifying thro parliament.
the Dutch have also decapitated the Constitution Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! . I have had enough. i will never ever will confide again in french people, they were who dragged the rest of EU countries towards a superstate, and when is the moment of truth, they cop out and beam like if they can do whatever they please. Frenchs and dutchs now stand like traitors to the rest of EU countries, perhaps is better this way, I don't want to be friends with that kind of people
I am doing handstands right now. France and the Netherlands are helping secure a weak EU and that means less competition for the US. Thank you, France. Thank you, Netherlands. Keep up the good work.
It seems like the people of both the Netherlands and France objected to certain specifics about the EU constitution, not the basic idea. It's a difficult thing to balance individual sovereignty and collective power.
In order for the EU to ever work, every component country is going to have to give up the very idea of sovereingnty... and thats just not going to happen.
It seems rather pointless to rant about French folk, Chirac and the EU... since nobody seems to really know: 1- What did the constitution offer or not offer that would make people reject it. 2- Have no idea what an EU constitution would mean for the world or simply Europe The important info is not being distributed in American medias, so people seem to only express opinions instead of judgements based on facts. As for me, I don't live in Europe, so the debate never reached me concerning the nature of the constitution. As for the value of a EU constitution, well.. I'm neither familiar what it would result in; the equivalen of a "united states in europe?", a more important economic region? So for the sake of having an intelligent discussion; can we have more facts and less nonsensical b.s. about the subject? Just an idea. Prisme Here's a possible start: (Dutch worried about social benefits and immigration laws and loss of national identity... now thats a subject.) http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050602/ap_on_re_eu/netherlands_eu_referendum
Damn this sucks! Well, I hope they will come up with another, better constitution soon. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!
I haven't read the actual document, but my parents have comented that it's more socialistic than that of U.S. They also said that the end goal is the United States of Europe, similar to U.S., which I strongly dislike no matter how profitable it may be economically. Moreover, I caught a glimpse of an article on BBC that said that the EU constitution is really British plan of domination; I didn't find that article particularly credible though. Can anybody enlighten me, briefly?
I never heard "United States of Europe" in the "no"-team, so I guess it's not the best way to explain the constitution (and they would have love this expression...). In fact the aim of this constitution was to give a general way for EU. Some people thought that it was new laws that would give more power to EU, that would reduce our government power in our own country : well, that we would lose control. Sorry but it's a tradition in France : never follow the leader - lol. No, I'm joking, in fact it more deals with many factors : fear of 25 and soon 27 members instead of 15, our government mistakes % work, the lovely idea that "you know what you have, but you don't know what you will earn with this looooong constitution (who the hell can read it????) that is not clear at all"... Anyway, it's democracy and as we live here (and eveni f it was a bad idea) a referendum was the most democratic way to ask this question : "Do you want this constitution?". Pfff, they said no! Now I wish one thing :I wish to see them crying when they will discover that they have troubles (social, economic...) and that the actual EU can't or don't want to help them. Then I'll be as happy as they are right now. Hum, that sounds sadic, no? I'm so proud of me...
Latvia has ratified the constitution today. Maybe the next time that a Constitution is proposed, all countries will opt for a ratification in Parliament, it seems that is a trustable way of getting a yes
